Vice President, Environment and Energy 
 
General Summary
This position is responsible for providing strategic direction and operational management of the Environment and Energy Division of the Institute by providing the leadership and organizational structure necessary for the attainment of strategic goals.
 
 
Key Responsibilities
Manage multiple functions and employees from multiple disciplines (both indirect and direct) at multiple facilities in multiple states.
Maintain contact with government and commercial clients at the highest levels regarding the status and progress of activities; meet customer commitments.
Maintain external awareness of industry changes which affect the operation of the division.
Serve as an Officer of the enterprise.
 
 
Position Specifications
Develop and execute the growth strategy for all locations of the Energy and Environment Division
Develop and implement the research, marketing, project development and operational goals; provide integration and coordination of research and business development activities for the Energy and Environment Division.
Provide management oversight to the total division research program consisting of multiple technologies and capabilities that may be only broadly related
Provide administrative management for the division by planning and approving capital and major operating expenditures consistent with operating plans; approve major proposals submitted by the division; allocate funding to business development, internal research and development, and other special purposes.
Identify interdivisional collaborative opportunities within Southern Research that maximize the generation of revenue and IP.
Provide management oversight to the implementation and operation of the Institute Quality Policy within the division.
Provide management oversight within the division to the implementation and operation of procedures and practices defined in the Institute Health and Safety Manual.
Propose, develop, and implement changes in practices and procedures in order to deliver the highest quality research, products, and services to customers.
Manage staff assigned to the division by hiring, developing, appraising, and motivating division senior management and technical staff.  Approve or delegate the approval of hires, terminations, disciplinary actions, promotions, and salary adjustments.
Perform public relations and civic activities.
Perform other duties as may be required by President and CEO.
 
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
BS, in engineering or applied sciences
Experience with the utility industry, oil and gas, alternative fuels, renewable energy, environmental technologies, water and wastewater, and pollution control technologies
Fifteen years of directly related technical experience  with a successful record of professional achievement and leadership
Highly networked individual in the government and commercial sectors in the energy and environmental research fields
Minimum of ten years experience effectively leading and managing a group of highly professional individuals.
Possesses sufficient experience in financial management to ensure that budgets are realistically established and attained.
Eligibility for Top Secret Clearance Required
 
Preferred Requirements
An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in engineering or applied sciences
MBA or significant experience in business management, including at least 10 years of full P&L responsibility experience
Demonstrated track record of growing a highly technical organization
Demonstrated success record of winning complex, multi-disciplinary, technical proposals in the commercial and government sectors
Interpersonal skills to enable successful relationships in a non-authoritative culture
