Type of employment: Permanent post
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Earth Sciences, Göteborg
First day of employment: As soon as possible
Reference number: PER 2014/298
Subject area

Geography with specialization in geomorphology
Specific subject description

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the larger departments within
the Faculty of Science with approximately 90 employees and about 500
students. The Department educates geographers, physical geographers,
geologists and oceanographers, who can fill the growing need for
geoscientists in society. Research in the department falls in three broad
profile areas: Geology, Physical Geography and Marine Environment. We have
strong teaching programs up to the Masters level in Earth Science, Marine
Science and Geography, as well as research programs in several earth
science disciplines. We have good infrastructure, IT resources,
laboratories and instruments for mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics,
dendrochronology and isotope analysis.
Job assignments

The position involves teaching and research in geography with a
specialization in geomorphology. Teaching and course administration is
primarily within the bachelor- and master programs in geography, as well as
supervision of bachelor and master theses. The position also includes time
for research within the field of the position.

Eligibility

Qualified for appointment as Senior Lecturer is a person who has been
awarded a PhD in a subject area relevant for the position. The ability to
teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. Candidates who do not speak
Swedish at the time of appointment are expected to acquire the necessary
communication skills in Swedish within three years of appointment.

Assessment

Scientific expertise is the most important criterion in judging the
applicant’s competence. A track record of scientific expertise in
geomorphology, specifically in earth-surface processes is required.
Research focused on risk analysis with important social relevance is an
additional, desired qualification. In addition, documented skills in
Geographical Information Systems, both in research and in teaching is
considered an important qualification. The research should principally be
documented by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The
documented ability to obtain research grants from research councils and
other external research financiers is the next most important criterion.

After that comes teaching expertise within the subject area for the
position. Teaching expertise should be documented in terms of the amount of
teaching done as well as experience in planning, organizing and leading
courses as well as supervising students.

This permanent appointment will be made following a holistic evaluation of
documented qualifications, competence and skills in the specified fields,
as well as an assessment of each candidate’s potential to carry out the
specified tasks, collaborate with the existing staff and contribute to the
development of the subject and the department.

The university is striving for a more even gender balance in its research
and teaching staff. Since most teachers of the Faculty are men, women are
especially invited to apply for this position.
