The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Scientist in vegetation-climate interactions
(m/f Ref. 2014-14).

The Emmy Noether independent junior research group Forest management in the Earth system, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), is carrying out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of the human impact on climate via land use. The group investigates the role of land management for past and future climate, including its potential to mitigate climate change. The work involves the development of a forest management module in the Earth system model of the MPI-M (MPI-ESM) to simulate the interactions of forest management, climate, and the carbon cycle.

We seek a post-doctoral scientist to guide the development of the forest management module in the ESM framework, in particular with respect to improved representation of forest growth and implementation of various management methods. On this basis, research questions on the assessment of the climatic effects of a range of future land management scenarios shall be formulated and investigated. Tasks also include evaluation of carbon cycle dynamics on local to global scale and compilation and integration of observational data of forest growth.

Required qualifications
- Highly-motivated individual with a PhD in Meteorology, Physics, theoretical Ecology, Geosciences or a related field.
- Proven record of working in interdisciplinary research projects.
- Expertise in scientific computing, including programming skills (Fortran, Unix systems).
- Experience with script-driven analysis of large observational and/or modeling datasets.
- Knowledge about forestry and forest ecology is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English and a record of peer-reviewed publications.

The position is initially offered for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension up to 4 years. The selection process will start onSeptember 12, 2014, and will continue until the position is filled. Conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, copies of scientific degrees, the names and contact information of three references, and a cover letter explaining their specific qualifications and motivation to apply, including their experience and interest in the physical and ecological aspects of the proposed work.
