The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
is seeking an innovative thinker to participate in field and laboratory
measurements of black carbon (BC) aerosol in the atmosphere and black
carbon particulate in snow, ice, rain, and cloud water. Black carbon is
an important short-lived climate forcer that contributes large
uncertainties to our understanding of the climate system. The selected
candidate will acquire and interpret data to improve our understanding
of black carbon in atmospheric and snow-bound processes. The candidate
will be appointed as aCIRESResearch Associate ("Research Scientist") and
have a strong collaboration with the Atmospheric Composition and
Chemical Processes Group within the Chemical Sciences Division of the
Earth System Research Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. The position will be for a one-year term, renewable in
succeeding years.

Duties
. Work with an existing team of researchers withinNOAA/ESRLto acquire
measurements of black carbon aerosol from airborne platforms and from
aerosolized BC-containing liquid using a single particle soot photometer
(SP2) (see Schwarz et al., Sci. Rep., doi:10.1038/srep01356, 2013; and
Schwarz et al., Geo. Res. Lett, doi:10.1002/2013GL057775, 2013.).
. Support the operation of instrumentation in field measurements at a
variety of locations.
. Interpret measurements of black carbon and other species to improve
our understanding of atmospheric processes and issues related to climate
and global change.
. Prepare and present scientific findings in peer-review publications
and at scientific meetings and workshops.
. Participate in the continued evaluation and improvement of black
carbon instrumentation.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications
. PhD in physics, chemistry, or related field.
. Interest in using custom instrumentation to make atmospheric and
atmospherically relevant measurements, and applying these observations
to solve problems of contemporary interest.
. Experience with the operation of complex instrumentation.
. Experience with measurements in a field environment is a positive.
. Experience with data acquisition and interpretation.
. Experience with development and presentation of scientific results for
meetings and for publication in scientific journals.
