<p style="line-height: 18.1200008392334px;">The Cooperative
Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (<span
class="caps">CIRES</span>) is seeking an innovative
thinker to participate in field and laboratory
measurements of black carbon (BC) aerosol in the
atmosphere and black carbon particulate in snow, ice,
rain, and cloud water. Black carbon is an important
short-lived climate forcer that contributes large
uncertainties to our understanding of the climate system.
The selected candidate will acquire and interpret data to
improve our understanding of black carbon in atmospheric
and snow-bound processes. The candidate will be appointed
as a<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">CIRES</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Research Associate
(“Research Scientist”) and have a strong collaboration
with the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes
Group within the Chemical Sciences Division of the Earth
System Research Laboratory of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. The position will be for a
one-year term, renewable in succeeding years.</p>
<p style="line-height: 18.1200008392334px;">Duties<br>
• Work with an existing team of researchers within<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="caps">NOAA</span>/<span
class="caps">ESRL</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>to acquire
measurements of black carbon aerosol from airborne
platforms and from aerosolized BC-containing liquid using
a single particle soot photometer (SP2) (see Schwarz et
al., Sci. Rep., doi:10.1038/srep01356, 2013; and Schwarz
et al., Geo. Res. Lett, doi:10.1002/2013GL057775, 2013.).<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><br>
• Support the operation of instrumentation in field
measurements at a variety of locations.<br>
• Interpret measurements of black carbon and other species
to improve our understanding of atmospheric processes and
issues related to climate and global change.<br>
• Prepare and present scientific findings in peer-review
publications and at scientific meetings and workshops.<br>
• Participate in the continued evaluation and improvement
of black carbon instrumentation.</p>
