Session Title: Anomalies and Disturbances in the Midlatitude Ionosphere

Session ID#: 2782 (SPA-Aeronomy)

Session Description:
We tend to think of the midlatitude ionosphere as being relatively quiet and uninteresting. However, this is the region where many important phenomena, such as traveling ionospheric disturbance (TID), midlatitude ionization trough, and winter anomaly, occur. Ionospheric disturbances in midlatitudes during geomagnetic storms are comparable in magnitude to those at low and high latitudes. Recent radar observations at a midlatitude station demonstrate that the occurrence rate of the electron density irregularities in middle latitudes is as high as that in low latitudes. This session solicits papers for the topics related to the anomalies and disturbances in the midlatitude ionosphere. The topics include TID, field-aligned irregularities in the E and F regions, ionization trough, hemispheric and seasonal asymmetries of the ionosphere, gravity wave effects, storm-time ionospheric disturbances, connection to high- and equatorial-latitude ionosphere, and the effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, and tornados.

Index Terms:
2435 Ionospheric disturbances [IONOSPHERE]
2437 Ionospheric dynamics [IONOSPHERE]
2439 Ionospheric irregularities [IONOSPHERE]
2443 Midlatitude ionosphere [IONOSPHERE]
