WPS (your second line) makes the file containing the SSTs that WRF reads in when sst_update=1 (your first line).
Hope this helps,

Subject: [Wrf-users] SST update versus SST used in initial conditions
Hi,
I would like to know which is the difference if there is any between:
- updating daily SST information into the model via sst_update =1 in namelist.input and
- Introducing SST information via WPS with the “prefix = 'SST' and fg_name = 'FILE' “ in namelist.wps?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Kindly regards,
Elena
