POST-DOC OPENING AT PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY
Job Title: Post Doc Algorithm Development & Analysis for
Multi-Resolution Climate Models
Job ID: 301465
Location: PNNL - Richland, WA
Group/Directorate: Atmospheric Chemistry & Meteorology / Fundamental &
Computational Sciences
Job Description
---------------
PNNL has an immediate opening and seeks a post-doctoral researcher to
develop expertise with the new generation of multi-resolution climate
models and to apply them to a variety of problems. Example models include
MPAS and the HOMME cores in CESM and stand-alone versions. The candidate
will work as part of a team tasked with improving the atmospheric physics
parameterizations so they operate well within multi-resolution grids. In
addition to prior atmospheric modeling experience, a specialization in a
particular parameterization type, e.g., clouds or the boundary layer, is
highly desirable. The PNNL group interacts with other leading climate
science activities nationally and internationally and this position can
lead to high visibility and leadership in the research community.
The successful candidate will:
* Conduct technical research on reducing scale dependence of climate model
parameterizations and document issues arising from their scale dependent
behavior
* Develop expertise and serve as a point-of-contact for the research team
for issues relating to running the multi-resolution model
* Publish research and present results in highly visible, peer-reviewed
venues (journals and conferences)
* Collaborate productively with internal and external scientists
Qualifications
--------------
* Familiarity with the WRF and/or CESM models, or equivalent
* Strong understanding of current cloud parameterization techniques
* Demonstrated ability to analyze observations and use them to evaluate
and understand model results
* Fluent in Fortran, and familiar with an interpreted computer language
(Perl, Python, IDL, etc.)
* Peer-reviewed publication record in a relevant area
* Ability to work independently and to efficiently deliver results
* Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
Minimum Requirements
--------------------
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an
accredited college or university. All staff at the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in
the United States.
