POST-DOC OPENING AT PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY
Job Title: Post Doctorate RA - Scale-Adaptive Parameterization
Development for Climate Models
Job ID: 300774
Location: Pacific Northwest National Laboratories - Richland, WA
Directorate: Fundamental & Computational Sciences
Group: Atmospheric Chemistry & Meteorology
Job Description
---------------
The Atmospheric Chemistry and Meteorology Group of the Atmospheric Sciences
and Global Change Division seeks a Post Doctoral Researcher to actively
participate in research involving the investigation and development of
scale-aware parameterizations for climate models. The position will target
the improvement of parameterizations for next-generation climate models with
multi-resolution domains. Work will focus on evaluating scale dependency of
current parameterization techniques and also on the development of new
techniques that will enable parameterizations to function across a range of
model grid spacings. Experience with regional and global models, along with
cloud parameterizations and the interplay between parameterizations is
desired. The PNNL group interacts with other leading climate science
activities nationally and internationally and this position can lead to high
visibility and leadership in the research community.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
* Conduct technical research on reducing scale dependence of model
parameterizations
* Publish research results in highly visible, peer-reviewed venues
(conferences & journals)
* Interact with internal and external research staff and domain scientists
for collaboration purposes
* Participate and make presentations on the work
* Participate in team meetings, and potentially interact with funding
clients
Minimum Requirements
--------------------
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an
accredited college or university. All staff at the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in
the United States.
Qualifications
--------------
* Familiarity with the WRF and/or CESM models, or equivalent, ideally for
applications ranging across scales
* Strong understanding of current climate model parameterization techniques
* Demonstrated ability to analyze observations and use them to evaluate and
understand model results
* Fluency in modern Fortran required, and at least a working familiarity
with an interpreted computer language (Perl, Python, IDL, etc.)
* Peer-reviewed publication record in a relevant area highly desired
* Ability to work independently and to efficiently deliver results
* Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
