PhD studentship, ‘Modelling the interactions of drainage winds with an
urban heat island in a stable atmosphere’, Centre for Atmospheric &
Instrumentation Research at the University of Hertfordshire, UK.
Closing date: 16th July 2010.
A PhD studentship is available in the Centre for Atmospheric &
Instrumentation Research (CAIR) at the University of Hertfordshire,
UK. The focus of the PhD project is on (i) the understanding,
characterisation, and modelling of mixing induced by drainage winds in
a stable atmosphere, and (ii) their interaction with the heat island
of an urban area located down the slopes. This project will provide
information to research, design, and develop schemes to parameterise
mixing induced by drainage winds in numerical models of all scales.
This will make it possible to improve the representation of terrain-
induced exchange processes in models and will add tremendous value in
assessing their impacts on climate, weather, and atmospheric
composition.
The PhD student will work with Dr Charles Chemel, a research scientist
with the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) based at the
University of Hertfordshire. The PhD project proposal will address
targeted issues highly relevant to NCAS, by building up on previous
and ongoing work. Scientific interactions will be expected and
strongly encouraged within CAIR. The PhD work will also benefit from
well-established national collaborations (primarily with NCAS) and
international collaborations.
The closing date is 16th July 2010 and the expected starting date is
1st September 2010.
Applicants are required to have (or be about to receive) a 1st or
upper 2nd class honours degree in physics, mathematics, or in an area
closely related to physical or environmental science. They are
expected to be fluent in English. The limit of tenure is 3 years. The
successful applicant will receive a stipend covering maintenance and
University fees for EU students for 3 years. Applications from non-EU
students are also welcome, but the studentship will only pay for the
EU fee rate, the difference with the non-EU rate being taken out of
the stipend.
The short-listed applicants will be expected to attend an interview in
person at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, UK, during the
week beginning 19th July 2010. No expenses are being offered to the
interviewees.
To apply, please contact Mrs Lorraine Nicholls
(l.nicholls at herts.ac.uk). Applications should include a CV and
reference letters from two professional referees. Informal inquiries
about the PhD project proposal can be made to Dr Charles Chemel (c.chemel at herts.ac.uk
).
