The Little Alaska Weather Symposium (LAWS '08)

Call for Abstracts
The following sponsors (listed alphabetically)
* Alaska Region, NOAA National Weather Service
* Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (UAF)
* College of Natural Science and Mathematics (UAF)
* Geophysical Institute (UAF)
* International Arctic Research Center (UAF)
invite you to attend the Little Alaska Weather Symposium. The symposium
provides a forum for the exchange of operational and research information
related to weather in the Alaska environment. Participation from academic,
research, military, government and private sectors is encouraged.
Primary areas of focus are anticipated to be
* Operational forecasting and observational sources in Alaska (Invited
speaker TBD)
* Polar aspects of weather (Invited speaker - John Cassano, CIRES/ATOC,
University of Colorado at Boulder)
* Reanalysis and data assimilation (Invited speaker – Eugenia Kalnay,
Distinguished University Professor, Department of Atmospheric and
Oceanic Science, University of Maryland)
However, all abstracts relating to weather in Alaska are welcome
* Schedule/Venue *
This will be a two-day symposium held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
campus on Monday and Tuesday, 12-13 May 2008. Snacks will be provided and
meals will be on-your-own, with an organized evening out at a local
establishment.
* Abstract Submission *
The deadline for one-paragraph abstracts for a 20-30-minute presentation is
Tuesday, 4 March 2008. See the symposium web page for abstract submission
procedures.
* Registration *
Registration is required by Tuesday, 30 April 2008. See the symposium web
page for registration instructions. There is no registration fee.
* Special Issue on "Polar Weather in Atmospheric Research" *
There may be an opportunity for a special issue of "Polar Weather in
Atmospheric Research" (Elsevier) based on symposium presentations.
If we get enough interest we can prepare a proposal with potential titles
and the respective abstracts together. Please check the checkbox on the
registration page if you are interested in this.
