The Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research
Center is seeking a post-masters or post-doctoral scientist to join a
multi-disciplinary team focused on applications of environmental modeling
and data analysis. The department has an atmosphere in which basic
research is combined with experience on technical problems arising in
industry. On-going research includes high-performance computing and
visualization in atmospheric and earth sciences as well as differential
equations, dynamical systems, machine learning, mathematical optimization,
numerical analysis, statistics and other disciplines. In addition to
being located at a world-class research institution, the candidate will be
part of a team that operates an in-house multi-channel NOAAport system for
real-time access to both computed and observed weather data, a dedicated
high-performance computing cluster, and 3d graphics workstations.
The candidate would be responsible for the enhancement and operation of a
meso-gamma-scale model-based weather forecasting system used in
weather-sensitive decision support applications. The successful candidate
will work with the extant team to improve and maintain operational
capabilities, and develop and incorporate new modeling, analysis and
visualization techniques that are part of an end-to-end solution with
applications ranging from water and energy management to emergency
planning for and response to severe weather and flooding events. In
addition, the candidate will work with the team to define and execute a
research and development agenda, be able to invent and implement new
techniques, have strong communication skills and a desire to see new
technology applied in real-world situations. For further information

The candidate should possess experience with both the operations and
scientific use of non-hydrostatic numerical weather prediction codes such
as WRF-ARW, RAMS or MM5. Knowledge of surface and upper-air measurements
as well as satellite and radar observations and utilization of NOAA/NWS
data streams is desirable. Experience with a high-performance parallel
(cluster) computing environment (e.g., IBM Cluster 1600, Linux clusters)
is desirable but not required. Each candidate must have a doctoral degree
or a masters with extensive operational and/or programming experience.
Major Field of Study: Atmospheric or related sciences
Required Computing Skills: Strong meteorological computing skills in a
Unix environment (AIX, Linux), scripting, FORTRAN programming
Desirable Computing Skills: Data formats/structures (e.g., netCDF, GriB),
visualization, graphics and image processing (e.g., OpenDX, GEMPAK, GrADS,
ImageMagick), C/C++, Java and Web programming/deployment, user interface
programming (tcl/tk, Qt), parallel computing (MPI, OpenMP)
