Dear tgcmgroup:
This announcement of funding for combining netcdf and hdf5
will mean, among other things, that parallel i/o for netcdf
files may become available.

Hi,
We're pleased to announce that a joint Unidata/NCSA project
"Merging the NetCDF and HDF5 Libraries to Achieve Gains in Performance
and Interoperability"
<http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/proposals/NASA-AIST-2002/abstract.html>
was awarded funding under NASA's Advanced Information Systems
Technology (AIST) Program:
http://www.nasa.gov/HP_news_03101.html
The proposed work will create a data access library that preserves
desirable common characteristics of netCDF and HDF5 while taking
advantage of their separate strengths: the widespread use and
simplicity of netCDF and the generality and performance of HDF5.
Unidata will collaborate closely with Mike Folk (coPI) and other
researchers at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications to
develop the new data access library during the next two years.
