Perhaps of interest to some of you:

In the research group Theory of Atmospheric Dynamics and Climate at the
Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences of the
Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University Frankfurt there is a vacancy for a

Research Associate (Akademische/r Rat/Rätin auf Zeit)

The initial appointment will be for three years.

Applicants should hold a PhD in meteorology, physics, applied
mathematics, fluid dynamics, astronomy or a related field. Expected is a
strong background in theory and/or modeling and a capability for
research in atmosphere dynamics. Desirable would be experience in the
theory of stochastic dynamical systems and/or with large fluid-dynamical
codes. The specific research field shall be theory and modelling of
stochastic/deterministic mesoscale and sub-mesoscale wave dynamics and
its interaction with larger-scale systems. The ultimate objective is the
improvement of the description of gravity waves in weather and climate
models.

The post offers the opportunity for further scientific qualification
within the German system (Habilitation). Within this framework a modest
participation in teaching in the meteorology program and in attracting
external funding is expected. The research activity is to be embedded
both in a national research initiative (DFG research unit) on the
multi-scale dynamics of gravity waves, and in the corresponding
international scientific community.

Some information on the research group can be found under
http://www2.uni-frankfurt.de/45681958/Theory-of-Atmospheric-Dynamics-and-Climate.
Its focus is on scale interactions in atmosphere dynamics, with
applications to large-scale low-frequency variability and to
gravity-wave dynamics. Middle-atmosphere dynamics is another field of
work. Techniques used include multi-scale asymptotics, stochastic
methods, and numerical simulation. Inquiries should be addressed to
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Achatz (achatz at iau.uni-frankfurt.de).

Applications with the usual documents (CV, diplomas, and a list of
publications) should be sent by June 15, 2014 to Prof. Dr. Ulrich
Achatz, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Institut für
Atmosphäre und Umwelt, Altenhöferallee 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main,
Germany. Applications will be considered beyond this date until the post
has been filled.
