*Abstract*

The NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) ensemble Kalman
filter-based land data assimilation system has recently been coupled to the
Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS-5) atmospheric modeling and data
assimilation system. This coupled Land and Atmosphere Data Assimilation
System (LA-DAS) is demonstrated in this seminar, through a series of
experiments assimilating land surface skin temperature observations into
the GEOS-5 system. The assimilated skin temperature estimates are obtained
3-hourly from geostationary Earth orbiting satellite observations, and a
dynamic observation bias correction scheme is used to address the biases
between the modeled and observed skin temperature estimates. The skin
temperature assimilation experiments are examined in terms of their impact
on the modeled skin temperature and low-level atmosphere, and on subsequent
atmospheric assimilation cycles.
