Dear Colleagues - Please bring this REU opportunity to the attention
of your juniors and sophomores.
Introduction:
The National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma, invites motivated
undergraduate students interested in a career in scientific research
or secondary science education to apply for a 10-week summer research
program. The 10-week program will run from May 26 - August 1, 2008*.
A stipend of $4,200, $1575 subsistence (for housing and food), and
$500 travel allowance will be provided. Participants will also
receive a travel allowance to present their work at a professional
conference.
*Students at schools on quarter systems will be accommodated. Please
let us know the dates you are available in the Concerns or Comments
section.
Scope:
Participants conduct a short scientific research project under the
supervision of a mentor from one of the University of Oklahoma or
NOAA facilities in Norman (see <http://nwc.ou.edu>http://nwc.ou.edu
for links/information). At the end of the 10-week program
participants prepare and present a paper reporting the results of
their work. Research experience is supplemented by workshops, field
trips, lectures, tours of OU and NOAA facilities, and a variety of
social activities. Research topics may include any of the current
research efforts and depend on mentor volunteers. Possible outcomes
of the program include a participant liking research and meteorology,
liking the nature of research but not meteorology, or realizing a
career in research is not for them. Any of these outcomes is
acceptable!
Eligibility:
Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program through
the summer of 2008 and be a US citizen or permanent resident. If you
are graduating from a community, tribal, or other 2-year college you
are eligible so long as you have enrolled in a 4-year institution to
complete an undergraduate degree. Applications from women and
minorities are particularly encouraged. The University of Oklahoma is
an equal opportunity institution.
