DEAN

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Central Michigan University is seeking a highly accomplished leader
with the vision and proven administrative acumen to lead and advance
the disciplines in the natural sciences and engineering and related
disciplines to new levels of national prominence.

The college, with a budget of $24 million, enrolls approximately 21%
of CMU's students including degree programs at the undergraduate,
master's and doctoral level, and is supported by over 160 regular and
temporary faculty, 42 staff as well as 150 graduate assistants.  The
academic departments that comprise the College include biology,
chemistry, computer science, geography, geology, engineering and
technology, mathematics, and physics.  The college's academic
facilities are located in four buildings on the Mount Pleasant campus
and also include a comprehensive Biological Station on Beaver Island
in upper Lake Michigan. A major national nanotechnology center is
located at the Central Michigan University Research Corporation
adjacent to the campus and is closely tied to research programs in the
college.  The college also sponsors a unique residential college for
undergraduate students.

The dean is the chief academic officer of the college, reports
directly to the Executive Vice President/Provost, and serves on the
Council of Deans. The successful candidate will be expected to provide
academic leadership to build upon the outstanding teaching, research,
and externally funded work within the college.  These responsibilities
include strategic planning; academic program development including
international partnerships; recruitment of excellent faculty, staff
and students; promotion of external grant writing; fund raising and
administrative oversight of budgets.  The dean is responsible for
effectively representing the college to internal audiences, alumni,
corporate, and other external communities. The dean is also expected
to advance diversity and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration
both within the college and between it and the other CMU colleges.

Qualifications for this position include: academic credentials and
record of accomplishment in a STEM (science, technology, engineering,
mathematics) field at a level which would lead to appointment as a
tenured full professor; evidence of strong communication skills;
demonstrated success with shared governance; a strong record of
commitment to diversity; evidence of outstanding administrative and
leadership experience; strong budgeting and financial planning
experience; successful grant writing and fundraising experience; and
an understanding of and commitment to public higher education.

Established in 1892, Central Michigan University has an enrollment of
27,000 students, including over 20,000 students on the university's
main campus. Classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a doctoral
research university, CMU is recognized for strong undergraduate
education and a range of focused graduate and research programs, and a
demonstrated commitment to diversity. CMU is a student-focused
university with opportunities for leadership, internships, and
off-campus volunteer programs. CMU competes at the NCAA Division I-A
Football Bowl Subdivision level in athletics and is located in Mt.
Pleasant, an expanding mid-Michigan community of approximately 25,000
permanent residents. A recently developed tourist destination point,
Mt. Pleasant has retained its small-town flavor while embracing a wide
variety of special interest groups and outdoor recreation
opportunities.
