Hello Everyone,

I'd like to draw your attention to an opportunity to get involved with the
NSF NCAR Convergence Science Program that was posted in Sundog

included the information from that post below. Please consider attending
one of our information sessions to learn more about the program and the two
opportunities we have for getting involved (dates, times, and calendar
links are also listed below).

The NSF NCAR Directorate is developing a Convergence Science Program to
accelerate NSF NCAR’s leadership role in enabling and conducting
convergence research for the Earth systems science (ESS) community.


What is convergence science? Broadly defined, convergence science is a
means to solve complex research problems that arise from either pressing
scientific or societal needs, through deep integration across diverse
disciplines (see here

Convergence is an approach that can be undertaken to investigate science
questions and/or societal problems.


What is the vision of the Convergence Science Program? The vision is for
NSF NCAR to be a place where convergence science for the field of Earth
Systems Science is deeply understood, valued, and supported –
scientifically, culturally, and financially.  We are working to help NSF
NCAR reflect its role as a National Center pertaining to convergence
science by conducting strategically important and challenging convergence
research; enabling convergence through training, mentoring, and other
workforce development skills for researchers and community partners; and
determining other key needs to serve NCAR and the broader communities.


How can you get involved and learn more? The Convergence Science Program is
hosting two informational sessions to provide an introduction to the
program’s vision and proposed efforts and to share two new opportunities to
get involved with the program. The two opportunities are:

   -

   Community of Practice - Ambassadors (CoP-A): We are currently recruiting
   a cohort of ambassadors to support and be supported by the Convergence
   Science Program. These positions will come with some FTE support (at least
   1 month of time and potentially more) for at least 9 months and potentially
   longer. See here

   additional details about the Ambassadors position. We currently have
   funding to support 1-2 ambassadors per lab. We are seeking to create a team
   with a wide range of perspectives and experiences. We encourage all who are
   interested to apply, no matter if you’re new to this type of research or if
   you have years of experience with it!

   Community of Practice - Interest Network (CoP-IN):  We are creating a
   network of those who are interested in convergence science that is open to
   all NCAR staff, affiliates, and visitors who wish to join and stay

   This network is open to any and all who are interested!


Applications for CoP-A and/or CoP-IN: We have a short application for those
interested in participating in either opportunity. Applications are due
Friday, February 16, 2024, and applications can be submitted here

Recommendations for CoP-A and/or CoP-IN: We also welcome recommendations of
those who you think would be good applicants. There is no requirement to be
recommended, and you do not need to self-recommend, just apply.
Recommendations are also due Friday, February 16, 2024. We will contact the
nominees by Tuesday, February 20, and will give them one week to apply.

We plan to announce CoP-A selections by Monday, March 4, 2024, and
appointments will begin on Monday, April 1, 2024. The first CoP-IN meeting
will be held at the end of April.


Informational sessions: We highly encourage all who are interested in the
program overall and/or in getting involved to join one of our two
informational sessions. During these sessions, we will provide a brief
overview of the program and have ample time for questions and discussion.
