From lluna at ucar.edu Fri Aug 16 14:32:50 2024 From: lluna at ucar.edu (Lorena Medina Luna) Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2024 14:32:50 -0600 Subject: [Nsa] Call for NSF NCAR to participate in Guest Lectureship at the University of Arizona Message-ID: Dear NSF NCAR Scientists, We are working to find a guest lecturer who can support professor Dr. Sylvia Sullivan at the University of Arizona with three lectures for her course on Aerosol Physics for Spring 2025. Sylvia is working on a CORE Award project called ?Interactive Graphics and Virtual Reality to Communicate Research on Clouds and Precipitation? with NSF NCAR Computation and Information Systems Laboratory?s (CISL) Visualization Services and Research Group. Guest Lecture Opportunity: For this opportunity, we are seeking a scientist who could teach three lectures in-person of the Aerosol Physics class, specifically on ?Aerosol impacts on climate and/or health?. The lectures take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 -9:15 am Arizona Time (Please note that the time zone switches from MT to PT when Daylight savings time starts in March). This course will take place in-person, but depending on which days the lectures fall on, it may be possible for one lecture to be held virtually. Funding is available for this opportunity. Deadline for Commitment: If you are interested in this opportunity or have additional questions, please let Lorena (lluna at ucar.edu) know by Tuesday, August 27th to set up a time to meet and discuss more and have ample time to connect you with Sylvia. Our NCAR DEI team will support you in preparation for guest lectures through meetings and conversations to ensure you feel comfortable and ready to step into this role, and this would be in addition to the meetings that you have with Sylvia. Funding is available for this opportunity and includes time for meetings, preparation, travel/lodging, lectures, and as determined in conversation. Collaboration: NSF NCAR scientists will work in collaboration to: - Establish norms and expectations as co-facilitators of the course - Determine whether in-person or virtual options work best for this opportunity - Share lectures as agreed upon, ahead of the lecture dates - Connect and have open communication Guest Lectureship: An in-person guest lectureship could enable opportunities for NSF NCAR scientists to engage with students during office hours, to engage with faculty within the department and neighboring departments, build relationships with the university community, and build a network for possible research collaborations. NSF NCAR personnel will be expected to follow the code of conduct from each institution. Travel opportunity: Due to the nature of this type of session being in-person, we would like the scientist to have the opportunity to travel to the University of Arizona to teach these lectures in-person. This could vary, of course, depending on the dates the lecture lands on - for example, Tue, Thurs, Tues, or Thurs, Tues, Thurs. In either case, we can work with the scientist to determine which lectures would be in-person, and which one would be virtual if needed. You all ? as leaders and members of the NCAR Scientists? Assembly, the Early Career Scientists? Assembly, the UCP Early Career Assembly, and the Software Engineering Assembly ? play a key role in exactly the kind of accomplishments we celebrate as an organization each year. In light of that, I am writing to encourage you to consider nominating yourself or your colleagues for one of these awards. By convening and offering support to different groups of staff within our organization, you are building community and creating a culture of inclusion and excellence that we can all be proud of. This is something to celebrate alongside the other achievements honored at the Celebration of Excellence in November. There are a number of resources available on Sundog to help you in the nomination process, including a presentation on assembling a nomination , a template for recommendation letters, and a frequently asked questions page , which goes into detail about what makes a good nomination. Read more on the Employee Recognition Awards Procedures page . Nominations are open until Thursday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. MDT. On behalf of our entire organization, I thank you for your work in support of our mission. I hope to see you at the 2024 Celebration of Excellence, on Friday, Nov. 15, from 3-5 p.m !
