The documentation for *simpne  *
<http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/simpne.shtml>states it
uses 3 points
*simpne* - Integrates a sequence of unequally or equally spaced points
using Simpson's t*hree-point formula*.

Hence: 2 points will not work.
====================================

Possibly: the *ftcurvi*
<http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/ftcurvi.shtml>  could
be used
