Hi Greg,

By default, when you use gfortran, NCAR Graphics will be compiled with
underscores appended after Fortran routine names.

You would have to explicitly add "-fno-underscoring" to the FcOptions
line in $NCARG/config/LINUX file before running "make Everything"
in order to disable this.

If you didn't compile NCAR Graphics with -fno-underscoring,
then have you tried removing this option from your own compile
line?

  gfortran -fPIC -fno-f2c -O qgpvx.varc.AM.f
  -L/usr/local/ncl_ncarg-5.1.0DaP/lib -L/usr/lib64 -lncarg -lncarg_gks
   -lncarg_c -lX11 -lXext -lpng -lz

As a side, exactly what does the following echo back:

   nm /usr/local/ncl_ncarg-5.1.0DaP/lib/libncarg.a | grep plchhq
   nm /usr/local/ncl_ncarg-5.1.0DaP/lib/libncarg.a | grep cpezct

?
