I have used RNetCDF package in R successfully to read all NARCCAP model
output. You have to be careful about reading the time stamps correctly.

Most number crunching programs (R, matlab, etc.) have the ability to
read
netCDF files. It may be worth it to do that direction rather than use
ncdump.

I had the same problem with the MM5I/ccsm tas data not being recognised
by
ncdump or nc2text. For these files I processed them using matlab (using
the
netcdf routines) and everything worked fine.

I just tried it on 3hour precipitation from MM5I/ccsm and it worked
fine.
