  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

I was trying to use point2grid to regrid a file for MET to read but was not
successful. The warning is "no matching cells between input and the target
grid", but I believe the augments I choose should cover the required
domain. What is the problem then?

Hi Binyu,

I just checked the RAL ftp site and there isn't anything in the
directory
you specified. Can you please include the config file and input file?
I'd
like to re-create things on our end.

Regards,
Minna

Hello Minna,

Thank you for your quick response. I just uploaded the file. I didn't
use
any config file, I just do:
$ /gpfs/dell2/emc/verification/noscrub/emc.metplus/met/10.0.0-
beta3/exec/point2grid
VOLCAT_HIMAWARI-8_FLDK_s2020296_050000_v300250_VCB_
w167_FLDK_b2020295_204000_g001_pc_rg.nc "latlon 200 200 45 153 0.1
0.1"
bezy_2020296_05_regrided.nc -field 'name="ash_mass_loading";
level="(0,*,*)";'

I did get an output, but all grids are empty.

Best
Binyu

Hi Binyu,

I can reproduce the same issue on my end. I took a look at your
VOLCAT_HIMAWARI-8_FLDK_s2020296_050000_v300250_VCB_
w167_FLDK_b2020295_204000_g001_pc_rg.nc and the array for
ash_mass_loading
is very sparse, is it supposed to be this sparse?

Regards,
Minna

Yes, it is sparse. But it is not empty, if you use "ncview", there is
some
signal. Why can MET not catch that?

Thank you.

Hi John,

I don't know what else to look for in Binyu's issue with point2grid
returning no matches. I tried replacing his latlon string in the
'togrid' argument with G212 (to try some other grid) and I get the
same results- a warning and output with no values for ash_mass_load. I
also played around with the levels in the -field option. I did notice
that his data is very sparse, but he confirmed that that is what is
expected. Is the sparsity of data making it difficult for point2grid?

Thanks,
Minna

point2grid can support both directions: to higher resolution or to
lower resolution. The input could be sparse or dense.
The units attribute at latitude variable was wrong at the input NetCDF
file (degrees_north). But correction of the units to "degrees_south"
did not resolve the issue.
I created a github issue: https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1817

Cheers,
Howard

Hi Binyu,

It looks like the lat/lon in point2grid are flipped, there is a high
priority issue created in MET to address this:

https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1817

In addition, point2grid should also be fine with sparse data.

Thank you for your patience while we get this resolved.

Regards,
Minna

Hello Minna,

I know there is a ticket about point2grid. But this dataset is
different
from the one that Howard is working with. The data that Howard is
working
with could be regridded by MET (v10.0.3 and above) and the output is
NOT
empty. Thanks.

Hi Howard,

I received another response from Binyu. The data you referenced in
the MET Github issue is different from the data she provided me. So I
think something else is going on with point2grid. I have her data on
'kiowa':

/home/minnawin/met-help/point2grid/VOLCAT_HIMAWARI-
8_FLDK_s2020296_050000_v300250_VCB_w167_FLDK_b2020295_204000_g001_pc_rg.nc

If you want to take a look. It is sparse, but ncview indicates that
there are sufficient points to define an area. I don't know what else
to do to trouble-shoot this issue. I replaced the latlon string in
the togrid argument to 'G212' to see if I could get different results,
but this still generates the same warning message.

The output from point2grid on the above data produces a netCDF file
with no data. I have that output, out.nc in the same directory on
'kiowa'

Regards,
Minna

If the issue is with point2grid, it will be covered by github issue
1817.

G212 won't work because there no overlapping with G212. Please try
regird_data_plane instead of point2grid. The downloaded NetcDF file is
a gridded data (spaced evenly horizontally and vertically).
regird_data_plane is the right tool.

./regrid_data_plane /home/minnawin/met-
help/point2grid/VOLCAT_HIMAWARI-
8_FLDK_s2020296_050000_v300250_VCB_w167_FLDK_b2020295_204000_g001_pc_rg.nc
test_regrided.nc "latlon 200 200 45 153 0.1 0.1" -field
'name="ash_mass_loading"; level="(0,*,*)";'

This command works well for me.

point2grid does not support all the input files which work well with
regird_data_plane. The common area is the CF complaint NetCDF input
with lat/lon projection. regrid_data_plane does not support a point
obs data from MET 10.0.0 beta 4. The main issue at github 1817 is
mapping from lat/lon projection to lat/lon projection. The github 1817
will be tested with two input files (a point obs file and a gridded
file).

Cheers,
Howard

Hi Binyu,

Any bug with your issue will be covered with the issue I referred to.
Howard recommends using regrid_data_plane on your data that you
supplied me:

--------------snip------------
Please try regrid_data_plane instead of point2grid. The downloaded
NetcDF
file is a gridded data (spaced evenly horizontally and vertically).
regird_data_plane is the right tool.

./regrid_data_plane
/home/minnawin/met-help/point2grid/VOLCAT_HIMAWARI-
8_FLDK_s2020296_050000_v300250_VCB_w167_FLDK_b2020295_204000_
g001_pc_rg.nc test_regrided.nc "latlon 200 200 45 153 0.1 0.1" -field
'name="ash_mass_loading"; level="(0,*,*)";'

-------------------------------
*except change the path to your VOLCAT data. He was successful in
getting
the data regridded.

Minna
