Hi all,
I'm successfully running MODE on some forecast- and observation fields - thanks for the amazing tool. I'm now trying to understand the output. The docs say that MODE should produce two output .txt files (the contingency table and the objects). This is not quite what I get out: those two files are present, but I also get a fcst_merge and an obs_merge.txt. I can't find information about these in the documentation, so thought I'd see if you can quickly clear it up for me. A little context: I'm interested in seeing, in satellite data of the 1970s, whether ERA5 produces the same number of AEW cloud features as the instrument sees, and whether the matched features have correct sizes; how well collocated they are etc. I think all of this info is in the obj.txt file, but it would be nice to get some conformation of this.
Additionally, I've considered using the MODE analysis tool to interpret the results across hundreds of cases and to see if there are any systematic differences between the reanalysis and the observations. (I'm also considering writing my own scripts to analyse the results for a more bespoke solution, but comparing my options would be nice). The documentation refers to .STAT files, but I don't know where these are being produced, if indeed they are. MODE analysis seems to work fine on the directory containing the .txt files - is this an error in the documentation, or should I be looking for these .STATs?

I asked one of the scientists (John Opatz) about this and he suggests
that
you send us your config file and these additional output files you are
generating. John doesn't think that mode is supposed to output .stat
files, but we'll need to verify with John Halley Gotway when he
returns to
the office next week. I can only find this information about what
mode
outputs:

Hi Minna,
I've had a look at the updated docs but these also refer to only to
ASCII output files. I'll keep reading to see if I can find anything
that clarifies the situation. The new docs have made me aware that I
am using a slightly outdated version of MODE - my version number is
9.1.3. Since I didn't install this myself I will have to ask someone
to update it. Nevertheless, I've attached my config file and (all four
of) the ASCII outputs - perhaps if this triggers anything in your
scientists you could let me know?

As for summarizing the results from MODE across many runs, there are a
few options.
(1) The MODE-Analysis tool does read the output from multiple runs,
apply user-specified filters, and summarize the results. It may or may
not meet your needs.
(2) The mode_summary.R R-script is posted on the MET website on this
page:
https://dtcenter.org/community-code/model-evaluation-tools-met/sample-
analysis-scripts
It is similar to the MODE-Analysis tool but provides a bit more
numeric output.
(3) Within the DTC, we load the output from MODE into the METviewer
database and display system. And then we use METviewer to plot object
attributes across lead times and with output from multiple models.
I'd say option (3) provides the most robust output but has the highest
learning curve. If possible, you could consider running METviewer as a
Docker container, as described in this training video:

Hi John,
Thanks for getting back to me. The information you've provided looks
useful and I'll certainly make use of it.
My main query concerns the output of my MODE runs. The documentation
suggests that I should see only two ACSII text files; I actually see
four. The files are named ...cts.txt, ...obj.txt (as expected),
...obs_merge.txt and ...fcst_merge.txt. I think the latter two of
these can be safely ignored, but I'd like some confirmation of this -
so far nobody seems to have expected these outputs. I am running MODE
9.1.3. I'm aware that there has been an update but frankly it was such
a faff to install (because I'm not good at these things - casting no
aspersions on the UCAR team) that I'll probably just keep using the
old version. It's worth me mentioning that the documentation for MET
version 9 doesn't mention the additional files I'm seeing either.

numeric output.
(3) Within the DTC, we load the output from MODE into the METviewer
database and display system. And then we use METviewer to plot object
attributes across lead times and with output from multiple models.
I'd say option (3) provides the most robust output but has the highest
learning curve. If possible, you could consider running METviewer as a
Docker container, as described in this training video:

Tom,
The MODE configuration file includes a lot of control of how MODE is
run.
There are 3 main steps in the MODE algorithm.
(1) Define simple objects in the forecast and observation fields
(2) Merge those simple objects in each field into clusters
(3) Attempt to match the forecast and observation clusters
The "_merge.txt" ascii files you're seeing are a result of (2) above
and
are only created if you've set up the MODE configuration file to
enable
"engine" merging. Please read the description of the "merge_flag"
option in
this chapter:

If you set "merge_flag" to "ENGINE" or "BOTH" then those files will be
produced. And yes, you can safely ignore them. The engine merging
option
attempts to merge objects within the same field by comparing those
objects
to THEMSELVES. Obviously, each object will match itself perfectly,
with a
total interest value of 1.0. But nearby objects can also result in a
total
interest value somewhat close to 1.0. And for any pairs whose total
interest value is above the threshold, MODE will merge them. By
default,
the exact same configuration options from the MODE config file are
applied
in this threshold merging step, but they can be overridden using the
"-config_merge" command line option. For example, maybe you only want
to
merge objects within the same field when total_interest > 0.9, but
match
objects across fields when total_interest > 0.7. You'd do that using
the
"-config_merge" option.
Those "_merge.txt" files contain the raw numbers summarizing the
results of
comparing the set of objects to themselves. And I suspect you probably
wouldn't be very interested in those results.
