Hi Minna -

I checked my sent box and that version has the content. I pasted it
into this
reply:

Does the MPR output produced when enabling the HiRA option contain the
matched pair data for each ensemble member surrounding each
observation?

Thanks for working on getting the answer, Minna. My thinking goes like
this.
When running Ensemble-Stat with point observations, the ORANK output
text file
contains the matched pairs for each ensemble member, so I was hoping
that
perhaps HiRA, because it creates an ensemble of model values
surrounding each
observation, might collect the ensemble values associated with each ob
and
output that.

Subject: MET V9.1 Point-Stat with HiRA (UNCLASSIFIED)
From: Minna Win
Time: Fri Apr 09 11:41:14 2021

Hi John,

I asked John Halley Gotway, and here is the response:

------------
No it does not. The MPR line type contains the obs value and the
single
interpolated forecast value. When running the Ensemble-Stat tool, the
ORANK
line type is analogous to the MPR line type from Point-Stat. When
doing
point verification in Ensemble-Stat, the ORANK line type reports the
observation value along with all the ensemble member values. When we
added
HiRA to Point-Stat, we added support for writing the ECNT and RPS line
types, but not the ORANK line type. It just seemed unnecessary and
like
overkill. But the best way to get the HiRA "ensemble" values would be
to
enhance Point-Stat to also write the ORANK line type when applying the
HiRA
methodology.
-------------

I hope that was helpful.

Hi Minna -

Thanks for getting the answer I needed as well as some background on
why the
ORANK line type was implemented in Ensemble-Stat, but not in Point-
Stat. In
response to John's idea about adding an enhancement to Point-Stat to
write out
the ORANK line type, I will consult with my research colleagues and
see if
there is research interest in obtaining the ORANK output from Point-
Stat (when
running the HiRA option) and will report back soon. We have developed
techniques for processing the MPR output of Point-Stat to support our
research
and there may be interest in being able to take advantage of a single
deterministic model run to generate the output from an ensemble along
with the
observations. This avoids having to configure and run an ensemble.

John

I spoke with one colleague who expressed some interest in having the
ORANK
line type output from Point-Stat run with the HiRA option, but we
don't have
the resources to fund the code modification. If the Point-Stat
enhancement
seems like something which is easily doable and that it is something
which you
were considering anyway, then we would be interested in testing it
whenever it
is released to investigate its utility in our research.

John,

The METplus Support team has recently transitioned over from providing
user support via met_help at ucar.edu to METplus GitHub discussions:
https://github.com/dtcenter/METplus/discussions

Please feel free to post future questions about MET/METplus to the
"Incoming" there.

Regarding this question, here's the GitHub issue for this feature
request that we wrote up:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1764

I'll go ahead and resolve this ticket.

Thanks,
John HG

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

Hi John -

Thanks for the update on the transition to METplus GitHub discussions.
I have
already created my account and have used it.

Regards the new feature (ORANK generation) #1764, when do you expect
that the
new MET version with the new feature would be released assuming the
current
plan for its release? Would this question be more appropriate to ask
in a
different forum now since the met_help email address is phased out?
Let me
know and I'll be happy to submit it elsewhere. Perhaps a comment in
the "Leave
a comment" field at:
https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1764 ?

R/
John

John,

The METplus Support team has recently transitioned over from providing
user
support via met_help at ucar.edu to METplus GitHub discussions:
Caution-https://github.com/dtcenter/METplus/discussions

Please feel free to post future questions about MET/METplus to the
"Incoming"
there.

Regarding this question, here's the GitHub issue for this feature
request that
we wrote up:
Caution-https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1764

I'll go ahead and resolve this ticket.

Thanks,
John HG

John,

I do not have an estimate for this work at this time. However, I did
write METplus project management and folks from the UK MetOffice (who
originally developed HiRA) to get their take on it. Yes, I do think
it'd be
great for you to add a comment on that GitHub issue:
   https://github.com/dtcenter/MET/issues/1764

Just state that that feature request would be useful for your work,
and if
possible, state how and why.

If you don't object, I'd like to resolve this existing met-help ticket
and
move over to the GitHub issue and/or Discussion.

Thanks,
John
