  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Good morning
I'm trying to use the point_stat tool but I get the "obs_var" (see below)
does not exist. how can I define the obs_var? I created the nc file with
the ASCIItonc

Once I have the final files from point stat what is the best way to plot
them? I need to plot the result and cant find the instructions to use the
plots. Could you guys point me in the right direction?

Taank you

Tatiana

Subject: help with point_stat
From: Minna Win
Time: Wed Jul 15 15:46:55 2020

Thanks Tatiana! It looks like your PointStatConfig_tutorial_run7 file
is
an HDF file, rather than a text config file:

point_stat
/gpfs/dell6/mdl/afs11/afs-an/afs11-
framework/cases/urma/20191202/02/urmacogb2p519120202tt.grb2
../ascii2nc/madis.metar.2019120202.nc PointStatConfig_tutorial_run7
   -outdir
. -v 3

So instead, replace the above with:
point_stat
/gpfs/dell6/mdl/afs11/afs-an/afs11-
framework/cases/urma/20191202/02/urmacogb2p519120202tt.grb2
../ascii2nc/madis.metar.2019120202.nc PointStatConfig
   -outdir
. -v 3

where PointStatConfig looks something like this*:
https://dtcenter.org/sites/default/files/community-code/met/online-
tutorial/metv8.0/config/PointStatConfig_default

*except you replace the appropriate values in the
PointStatConfig_default
file with relevant values for your situation. You might still end up
with
the same
error, as an ncdump on your madis.metar.2019120202.nc has 'obs_val',
but no
'obs_var' in the variables list.

Can you re-run your point-stat with the correct config file and let's
see
if we are getting the same error. If so, we might have to "step back"
and
take a look at your ascii2nc setup.

Regards,
Minna

Good morning Mina,
Thank I'll try that. but I think the file was overridden when I
uploaded
it. Attached is the original file. I will still try with the one I set
because it is similar

Thanks

Subject: help with point_stat
From: Tatiana Gonzalez - NOAA Federal
Time: Thu Jul 16 05:50:08 2020

Hi,
Forgot to ask. I created the madis.metar.2019120202.nc with your
ASCII2NC
how can I change the 'obs_val' to
'obs_var' in the variables list? I added the text file to the
gonzalez_data2 directory

Thank you

Hi Tatiana,

It's been a while since I used the NCO tools (NetCDF Operators), but
if you
need to change the variable name (or do any file manipulations or
calculations on NetCDF files), I found this handy reference which you
might
find useful:

http://research.jisao.washington.edu/data_sets/nco/#example7

It might be worth trying and re-running. I hope this helps.

Regards,
Minna

Hi Tatiana,

Can you please send the original data file you used in ascii2nc?
Let's see
if that is the source of the problem.

Regards,
Minna

Subject: help with point_stat
From: Howard Soh
Time: Thu Jul 16 09:57:54 2020

Internal only

Renaming obs_val to obs_var won't resolve the issues.

The ascii2nc generates some NetCDF outputs with the GRIB code instead
of the variable name. It depends on the input file. The global
attribute (use_var_id = "false") shows the ascii2nc output uses the
GRIB code. Both cases, the actual obs value is saved into "obs_val"
variable.

"obs_var" contains the variable names and is added only the variable
names are given (use_var_id = "true"). The warning should be ignored
this case (better way will be removing the warning)

WARNING:
WARNING: get_nc_var(NcFile) --> The variable "obs_var" does not exist!
WARNING:

Cheers,
Howard

Hello Tatiana,

One of our developers, Howard Soh, suggests that we don't try to
replace
the variable name in the NetCDF output file. According to Howard:

The global attribute (use_var_id = "false") shows the ascii2nc output
uses

Are you getting output from point_stat?

For plotting, you can look at Chapter 25 in the user documentation to
get
started:
https://dtcenter.org/sites/default/files/community-code/met/docs/user-
guide/MET_Users_Guide_v9.0.3.pdf

Are these the plots that you are looking to generate?

Minna

Mina,
Thank you for checking with the dev, I did get an output, but thought
it
was wrong due to the error.

I'm looking for something similar as chapter 25.2 Grid Stat and a
plotting line for bias or MAE. Do you guys have something similar? I
chose
point stat because I thought I could plot the values but I'm having a
hard
time understanding the output since I'm new to metplus

Thank you for all your help

Tatiana

Hi Tatiana,

Typically users provide their own plotting scripts. We are in the
process
of developing python scripts for use by METplus users but are not
ready to
release them you. Being you are in NOAA you may be able to use the
EMC
version of METviewer to generate these type of plots. I'll have Tara
try
to coordinate that for you.

Minna
