[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #95630] History for MET V9.0 Grid-Stat error (UNCLASSIFIED)

----------------------------------------------------------------
  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

I'm having problems debugging an error which involves one of the arrays of
threshold values I specified for one of the variables I want to verify. The
variable is wind gust (GUST). See the attached log file and the config file
I'm using. I tested two versions of this config file to see if removing the
requirement to generate mctc and mcts statistical output types might resolve
the issue, but it didn't. I would prefer to have those two output files if
possible.

Thanks.

Subject: MET V9.0 Grid-Stat error (UNCLASSIFIED)
From: Julie Prestopnik
Time: Tue Jun 16 15:15:47 2020

Hi John.

That is strange behavior. It seems there is a syntax error somewhere,
but
I'm not convinced it is at the point where the log file indicates that
it
is...

It looks like the open bracket ( { ) for "WIND" which is after "GUST"
is
not lined up with the others open brackets, although I'm not sure that
should matter. Could you please try lining it up with the others and
seeing if that fixes the problem? If that does not fix the problem,
could
you please send your data and confirm that you are using met-9.0 and
I'll
rerun and try to figure out the problem on this end?

Thanks!

Julie

Julie -

Thanks for your quick response. Good catch with the alignment of the
open
bracket. I'll edit to align with the others and try running again.
I've seen
similar issues when there are formatting issues in other parts of the
config
file.

I re-ran Grid-Stat after editing the config file to line up the open
brackets,
but I still get the error. The fcst file is too large to send via
email. If
you can provide me with your own email address, I can send all the
input data
using the file exchange service.

Subject: MET V9.0 Grid-Stat error (UNCLASSIFIED)
From: Julie Prestopnik
Time: Tue Jun 16 17:44:38 2020

Hi John.

I was able to recreate the problem you were experiencing. Not seeing
anything obvious, I simply manually retyped (I did not copy and paste)
the
entire GUST section from open bracket to close bracket above your
existing
GUST area, then removed your existing GUST section, and got a
successful
run. I'm not sure if there were invisible strange characters or what
exactly was going on, but it did seem to fix the problem. I've
attached
the modified file with a new name. Please give it a shot and let us
know
how it goes.

Thanks!

Julie

Julie -

Good news! I used your config file and it ran fine. Your diagnosis of
having some strange characters or formatting is correct. I'm using
Wordpad to edit files prior to transfer to the HPC, but I always use
the "dos2unix" utility on the HPC to restore the file back to unix
format. I have rarely had this issue in the past, but I recall a
similar issue happened when I forgot to run dos2unix and when I ran
it, and re-ran G-S that fixed the issue. What editor do you use on a
windows system to work with files which have to be run on a linux
system? Any other words of advice? I feel that this event is an
artifact of the situation I have while teleworking from home where I
have to edit files on my windows laptop and then copy them to the HPC.
If I was in my office, I could use my linux workstation and a unix
editor to work with these files. I prefer to create/edit on local
systems and then copy to the HPC so I can maintain a local backup
copy.

John

Thanks!

Julie

Hi John. I'm so glad it worked for you too! I am glad that the
strange
character situation didn't surprise you. I don't typically go back
and
forth from Windows to Unix. When I do use a Windows machine to access
Unix
systems, I use MobaXterm to work directly on the unix machines. Maybe
that
could work for you too.

I'll go ahead and close this ticket, but please submit a new ticket
with
any other questions you have.

Subject: MET V9.0 Grid-Stat error (UNCLASSIFIED)
From: Raby, John W USA CIV

Julie -

I also access my linux machine remotely from my windows machine. I
have tried
using a graphical window for running the Kate editor, but it's very
slow to
respond. What editor are you using on your unix machine?

Hi John. I'm so glad it worked for you too! I am glad that the
strange
character situation didn't surprise you. I don't typically go back
and forth
from Windows to Unix. When I do use a Windows machine to access Unix
systems,
I use MobaXterm to work directly on the unix machines. Maybe that
could work
for you too.

I'll go ahead and close this ticket, but please submit a new ticket
with any
other questions you have.
