Subject: Question about GRIB_Code table
From: Julie Prestopnik
Time: Tue Jun 09 15:02:29 2020

Hi Tatiana.

A GRIB code isn't required for column 7:

> Variable_Name for this observation (or GRIB_Code for backward
> compatibility)

In fact, a variable name is likely best because it is more easily
readable. The GRIB code functionality is supported for backward
compatibility with past MET versions, but if it works for you, you can
just
use a variable name (just do not use whitespace in the variable name)
that
describes the observation.

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any other
questions.

Julie

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the clarification. Does that mean "TMP" will work for
temperature? Are there any reserved words?

Thanks a lot

Subject: Question about GRIB_Code table
From: John Halley Gotway

Tatiana,

This is John. I work with Julie. There are really no reserved words
for
observation variable names... other than no embedded whitespace. I
often do
prefer to name them using standard GRIB code abbreviations (TMP for
temperature, RH for relative humidity, and so on). That makes setting
up
the config file for Point-Stat a little easier since you can use the
same
settings for the fcst and obs sections.

https://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/docs/on388/table2.html

But you can name them whatever you'd like.

John
