  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi ,
I noticed MET 9.0_beta2 is on casper and has a bunch of new options for
ensemble_stat.
Anything I should be careful about - or is it ready for a test drive?

Dave

Hi Dave.

I have installed met-9.0_beta2 on* cheyenne* at
/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases.

You can see the information you need to run that version on cheyenne
on our
webpage of Existing Build for met-9.0:
https://dtcenter.org/community-code/model-evaluation-tools-met/metv9-
0-existing-builds-metplus-3-0-installations

For quick reference for loading on cheyenne:
NCAR machine cheyenne

   - *METv9.0 BETA2*
      - PATCH LEVEL/DATE:
      - MODULES:
         - module use /glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/modulefiles
         - module load met/9.0_beta2
         - ncar_pylib

I would typically install on *casper* at
/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/casper, but I have not yet done
that. I
don't have a great grasp on the relationship between cheyenne and
casper.
I'm thinking that using the version installed on cheyenne may not work
on
casper, but I do not know for sure. You are welcome to try it, and
let me
know if it doesn't work. If you need met-9.0_beta2 installed on
casper,
please let me know when you would like it installed by and I'll see
what I
can do.

Thanks,
Julie

Dave,

You are welcome and encouraged to try out the new features in
met-9.0_beta2. These beta releases are intended to get feedback from
friendly users about enhancements. We hope this type of testing will
help
us shake loose bugs prior to the official release. So please do let
us
know what successes or issues you encounter.

However, the beta release should only be used for testing, not
production
runs. The new functionality is definitely subject to change.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway

Hi Julie,

Thanks for installing MET 9.0_beta2 on cheyenne. I'm test driving it
now.
One thing I love is the move to python3. I can almost use my python3
scripts in the same session as MET.
The thing that stops me is prepending
/glade/u/apps/ch/opt/python/3.6.8/gnu/8.3.0/pkg-library/20190627/bin
to the PATH variable in
/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/modulefiles/met/9.0_beta2.
The prepended PATH supersedes my own NPL virtual environment, which
has
more python modules.
If I remove
/glade/u/apps/ch/opt/python/3.6.8/gnu/8.3.0/pkg-library/20190627/bin
from
PATH, I can still use MET and my python 3 scripts work.

But I don't know if this is the solution for everybody. Is there still
a
reason to keep
/glade/u/apps/ch/opt/python/3.6.8/gnu/8.3.0/pkg-library/20190627/bin
in
PATH?
In other words can you shorten the prepend-path line in
/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/modulefiles/met/9.0_beta2 to

prepend-path PATH
$base/bin:/glade/p/ral/jntp/MET/MET_releases/9.0_beta2/external_libs/bin

?

Dave

Hi Dave.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I greatly appreciate it. I'm glad
you
like the move to python3.

Unfortunately, the answer is - I don't know.

Fortunately, you bet! Let's give it a try and see if anyone has any
issues
with it.

I just made the change in the modulefile, so please try reloading it
and
see if that works better for you. I hope that helps!

Julie
