[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #94902] History for MetViewer v2.11 question (UNCLASSIFIED)

  Initial Request

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

If I want to plot the number of observations (or matched pairs) which were
used to compute a given continuous error statistic such as ME do I need to
load the MPR.txt files in addition to the .stat files in the database or is
there a way to extract the value (TOTAL) from the .stat files only. I
reference the TOTAL values from the Point-Stat CNT.txt file which shows the
total number of matched pairs.

I did an experiment by loading in one db, just .stat files and in another
db, I loaded the same .stat files and the MPR.txt files together. In
METViewer, when I load the db with no MPR.txt files I do not see the
attribute stat "MPR_OBS" available for selection. When I load the db which
includes both .stat and MPR.txt files, I do see the attribute stat
"MPR_OBS". When I plot this stat, I see what appears to be a number count
which, I believe, is the number of matched pairs or "TOTAL"

John,

METviewer only loads files ending in the ".stat" (for output for
Point-Stat, Grid-Stat, Ensemble-Stat, and Wavelet-Stat) and files
ending in
"_obj.txt" for files from MODE and also the files that MTD creates.
It
does NOT load files ending in "_mpr.txt".

To plot the number of matched pairs included in the computation of
statistics, I'd recommend plotting the TOTAL column from the SL1L2,
CNT, or
CNT statistics line type... as you've already found.

Thanks for getting me back on track. I loaded the db containing only
.stat
files and I looked for "TOTAL" in the list of dependent variables but
it isn't
there.

John,

Can you tell me what version of METviewer you're running? It should
be
listed in the top-left corner of the GUI window. Plotting the TOTAL
counts
was actually a recent addition in version 3.0. Here's the GitHub
issue
which describes that change:

My version is v2.11. What do you recommend as the best way to upgrade?
Tatiana

Hi John,

As I remember, I shared with you .war and .tar files with METviewer
executables and the web app. I also gave you instructions where and
how to install these files.
I can build METviewer 3.0 for you and you will install it the same way
as METviewer 2.11. There is one more step you need to do for this
release. We updated the database schema and you need to update your
databases to work with v 3.0. I will provide SQL script that should
take care of that. You just need to run it on all METviewer databases.
Let me know if you would like to proceed with the update and I will
sent files to you.

Tatiana -

Thanks for your quick response and your offer to build METViewer 3.0
for me.

Yes, you are correct about the way the previous version was installed.
Understand that the installation for V3.0 will be similar to the
previous
except for running the script for the db update.

My concern about doing the install now is because I don't have ready
access to
my Linux system admin person who was involved. He still works for us,
just not
easy to work with him in this environment where we are all teleworking
from
home. I would like to do the install, but it might be better to delay
it until
we return to normal again.

I re-discovered a way to accomplish the plotting of the TOTAL value
associated
with the error statistics. I say re-discovered, because I can't recall
how I
originally came across it. Maybe in one of our earlier emails you
mentioned it
or it was something which I found in one of your example
load_spec_files which
made me think about the possibility of ingesting mpr.txt files into
METViewer.
There is some code in the file which allows you to set "True" to a
statement
which appears to specify loading of mpr.txt files. I tried that
yesterday and
indeed it seems to work. When I run mv_load.sh using that
load_spec_file and
specify the directory containing both .stat and mpr.txt files as the
location
of the data to be put into the database, the menus for the Y1 dep
variable
show "MPR_OBS" and "MPR_FCST" as options. I also tested loading .stat
files
only and these two options do not show up. I gather that this was a
preliminary capability which was made part of V2.11 to accomplish the
plotting
of TOTAL values. See attached plot which plots the TOTAL value for
both the
FCST values and the OBS values. The values are at the top of the plot
along
the x-axis. I would like to hear your thoughts about this approach to
plotting TOTAL values since I am not sure how it is really working.

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

Subject: MetViewer v2.11 question (UNCLASSIFIED)
From: Tatiana Burek
Time: Tue Apr 14 14:45:35 2020

John,
METviewer doesn't load mpr.txt - only .stat.
If in your load.xml you specify <load_mpr>true</load_mpr> than
METviewer will load records from .stat file with MPR line type. If you
choose <load_mpr>false</load_mpr> - those record will be omitted.

The values that are displayed in your plot on X2 axis are the number
of records that got processed for each independent variable.
n_records_for_mpr_fcst + n_records_for_mpr_obs.
Since you selected only one day and I assume you don't have any other
parameters like vx_mask that have multiple values in this particular
date than the values on X2 should be that you expect.

Tatiana

I reassigned ownership of this ticket back to John.

John,
could you verify that my assumption about the TOTAL values is
correct.
Thanks,
Tatiana

Subject: MetViewer v2.11 question (UNCLASSIFIED)

Tatiana -

Thanks for explaining what METViewer is really doing. I guess it just
ignored
the mpr.txt files. This is really good info!

I really had to be careful to avoid having .stat files with the same
hour,
such as 1200Z on 11 NOV and 1200Z on 12 NOV because I saw that the
values on
the X2 axis were double what I expected. When I fixed that, the
numbers all
came up fine.

I will be in touch about the upgrade when things are back to normal.

Take care.

R/
John

John,
METviewer doesn't load mpr.txt - only .stat.
If in your load.xml you specify <load_mpr>true</load_mpr> than
METviewer will
load records from .stat file with MPR line type. If you choose
<load_mpr>false</load_mpr> - those record will be omitted.

The values that are displayed in your plot on X2 axis are the number
of
records that got processed for each independent variable.
n_records_for_mpr_fcst + n_records_for_mpr_obs.
Since you selected only one day and I assume you don't have any other
parameters like vx_mask that have multiple values in this particular
date than
the values on X2 should be that you expect.

Tatiana
