  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
I am using MET6.1 version. I need to use the PointStat and need to
generate a .poly file over tropics (-30 S,30 N) globally. Please help me to
generate the mask_poly file.

With regards,
Sujata

Sujata,

The current release of MET is version 8.1.1, released in July 2019.
If
possible, I'd recommend upgrading to that version.

I see you have a question about generating masking region over the
tropics
from -30 to 30 degrees latitude. We've found that using polylines on
global grids can sometimes be problematic. The logic for defining
which
grid points are inside/outside the masking region isn't clear.

Instead, you can run the Gen-Vx-Mask tool using the latitude type
masking
(-type lat).

Here's an example I ran using some sample global "GFS" data:

*met-8.1.1/bin/gen_vx_mask gfs_2012040900_F012.grib
gfs_2012040900_F012.grib gfs_tropics.nc <http://gfs_tropics.nc> -type
lat
-thresh '>=-30&&<=30' -name TROPICS*

And then I plotted the result:
*met-8.1.1/bin/plot_data_plane gfs_tropics.nc <http://gfs_tropics.nc>
gfs_tropics.ps <http://gfs_tropics.ps> 'name="TROPICS";
level="(*,*)";'*

A PNG version of the resulting image is attached. Is that the type of
mask
you'd like?

I do think these commands will work using met-6.1, but there have been
several bugfixes in the last 2 years.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway

Hi John,
Thank you so much for your kind email. Actually I go back to
version
6.1 from version 7.0, as pb2nc is not handling properly in version
7.0.
During pb2nc, after 20% conversion, it is exiting and showing memory
issue.
When I go back to version 6.1, it works. Also, in Point_stat, it works
for
GRIB1 files, but I am getting error as "out of memory! Exiting " while
using GRIB2 files (though both GRIB1 & GRIB2 are of same size). Can
you
please suggest me to handle GRIB2 files as well?

With regards
Sujata

Sujata,

When we've seen memory issues when reading GRIB2 files in the past,
the
most likely culprit is how the grib2c library and MET were compiled.
Please read this page about "Compiling GRIB2 C-Library":

https://dtcenter.org/met-online-tutorial-metv8-0/tutorial-
setup/compilation/required-libraries

Specifically, make sure to remove the '-D__64BIT__' flag from the
Makefile
for GRIB2C. Using that flag in GRIB2C and not in MET (or vice-versa)
causes memory problems with reading GRIB2 data.

Were you able to get the mask defined as needed?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Thank you so much for your kind email. As per your suggestion, I
am
able to generate the poly file. The your suggested commands works well
in
6.1 and 7.0. Till now, I have not installed 8.1.1 version. Now, I am
getting stacked with GRIB2 files issue. May I ask some queries on
GRIB2
files as well?

With regards,
Sujata

Hi,
Is there any way to plot the .nc file generated through PB2NC utility?

Thanks and regards,
Sujata

From: Sujata Pattanayak
Time: Wed Oct 30 06:12:18 2019
