  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Sir or Madam,

I'm a graduate student in NUIST in Nanjing, China, and I'm sorry to bother you, but i want to ask some questions about the ASCII2NC tool in MET. There is a sentence in User’s Guide 4.1:The ASCII2NC tool has been enhanced in for this release of MET to handle data in both little_r and SURFRAD formats. I want to know where can i get the little_r format data? Is the same as i get form https://rda.ucar.ed/data/ds461.0/little_r? But when i use the data form https://rda.ucar.edu/data/ds461.0/little_r in ASCII2NC tool, i always get some error. So if i should transform those data(https://rda.ucar.edu/data/ds461.0/little_r) to the format that ASCII2NC tool can identify? And how to do that? Thank you very much, hope to hear from you.

Hi.

I see that you are having some trouble using ASCII2NC will little_r
files.
ASCII2NC has been able to read little_r data since METv4.1 as you
mentioned.

I am not sure where our users obtain their little_r data from,
however, I
would suspect it is from the Research Data Archive, where you get it
from.
I just pulled some little_r data, SURFACE_OBS_2019041906, from
https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds461.0/index.html#sfol-wl-
/data/ds461.0?g=719
and ran it through ASCII2NC using met-8.1 and received a successful
run.
See the command line I used and the output below:

dakota:jpresto% ascii2nc -format little_r SURFACE_OBS_2019041906
 SURFACE_OBS_2019041906.nc
DEBUG 1: Config File:
/d3/projects/MET/MET_releases/met-
8.1/share/met/config/Ascii2NcConfig_default
DEBUG 2: Rejected 0 observations off the masking grid.
DEBUG 2: Rejected 0 observations outside the masking polyline.
DEBUG 2: Rejected 0 observations not matched with station ID's.
DEBUG 2: Processing observations for 92158 headers.
DEBUG 1: Creating NetCDF Observation file: SURFACE_OBS_2019041906.nc
DEBUG 2: Finished processing 488132 observations for 92158 headers.

Were you using the -format option in your call to ASCII2NC?

If you are still having trouble with your data, please reply to this
email
with the command line call you are using and please send us your data
following the instructions in the "How To Send Us Data" section on
this
page:

help-desk

If you are able to get the command to work, please let us know as
well. I
hope this helps!

Hello,
First of all, sincerely thank you for your patient reply. My data is
as the same as you use, and after i change MET4.1 to MET8.1, i
received a successful run too. So i think the problem is caused by the
version of MET. Anyway thank you again!
Best wishes!

Hi KuiMing.

Thank you for letting us know that you were able to get a successful
run!
It's great that you upgraded to using our latest version as well.
I'll go
ahead and close this ticket, but please don't hesitate to create a new
ticket with any other questions you may have.
