[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #91080] History for F_RATE and O_RATE in nbrcnt.txt files

Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear John,
I have a question regarding the F_RATE and O_RATE in nbrcnt.txt files. From my understanding, F_RATE and O_RATE should not change with neighborhood size. As long as the threshold is the same, F_ and O_RATE should be the same, right? This is because in MET manual, F_RATE is the frequency of forecast events and O_RATE is the observed events.
The thing not clear to me is, what kind of grids these events are defined? If they all defined on the original (i.e., the smallest grid spacing) grid, then F_RATE and O_RATE should not change for different neighborhood size. Please clarify.
The reason I was using F_ and O_RATE is because I want to have a simple way to calculate BIAS. I thought BIAS=F_RATE/O_RATE.
We have other questions regarding aggregate FSS scores. Could we set up a telecom with you?
Thanks so much!
Huaqing

Huaqing,
Yes, you are correct. In general the F_RATE and O_RATE values should
not
change in the NBRCNT output lines for the same variable, threshold,
and
masking region. Yet, we I look at the output I see that they do in
fact
change. But there's a good reason for that. The F_RATE and O_RATE
number
represent the frequency of the event occurrence at the grid points
included
in the current line. Here's a subset of columns from two NBRCNT
lines...
everything is the same except for the neighborhood size:
*FCST_VAR INTERP_MTHD INTERP_PNTS FCST_THRESH LINE_TYPE TOTAL F_RATE
O_RATEWIND NBRHD_SQUARE 9 <5 NBRCNT 45302 0.91003 0.63829WIND
NBRHD_SQUARE
25 <5 NBRCNT 44837 0.91351 0.64313*
Notice that the number of pairs included differ: 45302 for a 3x3
neighborhood versus 44837 for a 5x5 neighborhood. This is due to edge
effects. The larger the smoothing area, the more missing data values
that
are included along the edge. So the number of matched pairs will inch
down.
If you instead only computed statistics over an inner subset of your
domain
and/or you reconfigured Grid-Stat to allow for more missing data
values,
this would happen less often.
Here's the default Grid-Stat config file setting:
*nbrhd = { field = BOTH; vld_thresh = 1.0;*
*...*
vld_thresh = 1.0 means that 100% of the data in the neighborhood must
contain valid data for it to be included in the result. You could
relax
that down to 50% (0.50), or even much lower, like 1% (0.01).
Another suggestion, try turning on the NetCDF output of Grid-Stat, the
nbhrd output in particular:
*nc_pairs_flag = {... nbrhd = TRUE;...}*
Then use ncview to see the result. As you click through the NetCDF
output
variables for neighborhood methods, missing data values creeping in
from
the edge of the domain should be pretty obvious.
Make sense?
Thanks,
John

Dear John,
Thanks for the quick reply. I need to digest what you wrote a little
bit more and get back to you tomorrow.
Also, do you have time tomorrow, so we can call you regarding the
aggregation questions.
Please let me know a phone number/time if it is OK.
Thanks so much!

John, Huaqing -
I have attached some Grid-Stat output (V5.2) we can refer to during
our
meeting at 1430 today. I'll send the NetCDF output file separately by
SAFE
since it is too big for email. I have all the Grid-Stat output. Do we
want to
look at any of the other files besides these?

Subject: F_RATE and O_RATE in nbrcnt.txt files
From: John Halley Gotway
Time: Tue Jul 16 14:33:44 2019
John,
Thanks for sending the sample data. Please see the attached animated
gif
which shows the effect of missing data values creeping in from the
edge as
you increase the neighborhood size:
9, 25, 49, 81, 121, 169, 225, 289, 361, 441, 529, 625, 729, 841, 961,
1089,
1225, 1369, 1521, 1681, 1849, 2025, 2209, 2401
Thanks,
John
