----------------------------------------------------------------
  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Met Helpdesk,
I'm trying to create a mask using the command:

gen_vx_mask -type poly
/scratch4/NCEPDEV/ohd/Francesca.Viterbo/Ellicott_NWM/STAGEIV_cut_1h_2728052018/
ST4.2018052723.01h_cut.nc ELLICOTT_unix.poly prova_poly_ellicott.nc -v 10

The script runs but the result is a mask with only one pixel.
The watershed I want to add is 9.5 km2 on a grid of 3 km2 of regridded
stage IV data so this might be possible but I would expect at least two
pixels. I have created the mask using arcgis and I can attach the polyline
mask to this email thread if necessary and the netcdf result.
Let me know if you need more informations about that.

Thank you very much,

Francesca Viterbo

Hello Francesca,

I see you have a question about defining a masking region for MET
using the
gen_vx_mask tool. I logged on to theia and took a look at your data.
I
reran your case and confirmed that the mask contains a single point.
I did
run the plot_data_plane tool to generate a picture and at least see
that
it's in the right spot (see attached mask.png).

In the beta version for met-7.1, we've added support for defining
masking
regions using shapefiles. So I went hunting around for a shapefile
corresponding to this region.

I pulled the Mid-Atlantic RFC from this site:
https://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/gisdatasets/

Then I ran the gis_dump_dbf utility in MET and see this list of
descriptions:

gis_dump_dbf b_marfc.dbf | grep NAME | cut -d'=' -f2 | tr -d '\n'

Do any of these ring a bell?

Thanks,
John

Dear John,
thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate you attempt to
reproduce my experiment in order to double check the results.

Unfortunately none of the names rings me a bell, but I'm generally
having a
very bad memory. Nevertheless I can attach the shapefile of the
watershed
attached to this email, if this can help you some way and try that on
the
7.1 MET version.

Thank you,
Francesca

Randy,

Can you please take a look at this shapefile the Francesca sent. I
tried
running it through gen_vx_mask, but all the grid points were always
turned
on. Running it through the debugger reveals that we're reading
lat/lon
values which include... (1967090, -1630850).

Running gis_dump_shp produces the output listed below.

Any idea where the problem may lie?

Thanks,
John

Hello Francesca -

Looking at the GlobalWatershed.shp file you sent us, I see numbers
like
these:

| | (1.63079e+06, 1.96716e+06)
| | (1.63077e+06, 1.96716e+06)
| | (1.63077e+06, 1.96717e+06)
| | (1.63074e+06, 1.96717e+06)
| | (1.63074e+06, 1.96718e+06)

| | (1.63064e+06, 1.96722e+06)

| | (1.63061e+06, 1.96724e+06)

| | (1.6306e+06, 1.96725e+06)

These are from the gis_dump_shp utility.

These are not latitudes and longitudes. Our GIS code asssumes that
the
numbers in a shp file are lats and lons. Could these numbers be
universal
transverse mercator coordinates?

In any case, our code is not set up to handle data that is not lat/lon
pairs. Is there any way you could obtain (or make) an equivalent file
with
the latitudes and longitudes?

Hope this helps.

Randy Bullock
