John, quick question, if I am comparing a forecast wind speed to a climo u/v wind component file, do I need to convert the climo to wind speed or does MET do this internally?

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

As long as the climo file is GRIB1 or GRIB2, MET will derive windspeed
on
the fly from the U and V components.

However, I would suggest running a test to confirm that there aren't
any
issues with MET or your data. Just run plot_data_plane to plot wind
speed
from your climo data. For example, let's say you have file named
"climo.grb" with U and V at 500mb, try running:

plot_data_plane climo.grb wind_P500.ps 'name="WIND"; level="P500";' -v
4

I used "-v 4" since at some debug level MET prints out log messages to
tell
you that it's deriving wind speed from the U and V components.

If this test goes smoothly, then I think you're all set.

Thanks,
John

Worked great. Really liking MET 8.1 so far.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

As long as the climo file is GRIB1 or GRIB2, MET will derive windspeed
on the fly from the U and V components.

However, I would suggest running a test to confirm that there aren't
any issues with MET or your data. Just run plot_data_plane to plot
wind speed from your climo data. For example, let's say you have file
named "climo.grb" with U and V at 500mb, try running:

plot_data_plane climo.grb wind_P500.ps 'name="WIND"; level="P500";' -v
4

I used "-v 4" since at some debug level MET prints out log messages to
tell you that it's deriving wind speed from the U and V components.

If this test goes smoothly, then I think you're all set.

Thanks,
John

Bob,

Great, glad to hear it. I did receive the following file from ARL
SAFE:
   grib2.2019013108.0006

Did you have a question about this file?

Thanks,
John
