  Initial Request

Support,

I'm having some issues using the point-stat tool with surface observations.
I'm trying to validate COAMPS forecasts in grib2 format against the NCEP
prepbufr observations. I'm successfully verifying using the upper air data,
but the surface fields are giving me some problems. I'm receiving error
messages like the following:

DEBUG 1: Forecast File:
/p/work1/tyndall/cylc-scratch/coamps_test/share/20160524T1200Z/verif/sfc_1_2
016052412_f0000.grib2

DEBUG 1: Observation File:
/p/work1/tyndall/cylc-scratch/coamps_test/share/pbnc_obs/prepbufr_2016052412
.nc

WARNING:

WARNING: MetGrib2DataFile::data_plane_array() -> No matching records found
for 'TMP/Z2'

WARNING:

I think what this error means is that point_stat can't determine what the 2
m level is in my grib2 file. I've verified that the GRIB file matches the
FNMOC grib tables, so I'm confident the grib2 data is being produced
correctly. When I use wgrib2 on my grib2 file, I get the following messages:

1:0:d=2016052412:TMP:2 hybrid level:anl:

2:12438:d=2016052412:DEPR:2 hybrid level:anl:

3:24876:d=2016052412:RH:2 hybrid level:anl:

4:38539:d=2016052412:UGRD:10 hybrid level:anl:

5:50977:d=2016052412:VGRD:10 hybrid level:anl:

So, my thought is that my level type ("Z2") isn't being specified properly
in my config file for point_stat. Do you have any suggestions for what I
should be using for the level flag in my config file? The MET documentation
doesn't have a whole lot of examples for different level types, besides ZX
and PXXX. I also noticed a GRIB_lvl_typ, but I couldn't find any
documentation on how to use it.

Thanks,

-Dan

Hi Dan,

Please try using “L2” instead of “Z2”. The latter searches for a
“vertical
level” with a value of 2 while the former searches for any level type
with
a value of 2.

MET just isn’t interpretation the “hybrid level type” as being a
vertical
level.

Hopefully that’ll solve it.

Thanks,
