Hello,
I'm trying to run plot_data_plane on a grib2 file and when I do, I get the
following message:
plot_data_plane seaice.t00z.south12psg.grib2.20190205 seaice_south.ps
> 'name="ICEC"; level="L0";'
> DEBUG 1: Opening data file: seaice.t00z.south12psg.grib2.20190205
> ERROR :
> ERROR : MetGrib2DataFile::read_grib2_grid() -> unexpected polar stereo

How do I handle this?
Thank you,

Lindsay,
Can you please send us, or point us, to the GRIB2 file which causes
this
error?
Thanks,
John

Sure thing, John. It's here:
theia:/home/Lindsay.Blank/sea_ice/seaice.t00z.south12psg.grib2.20190205.
Let me know if you have any permissions issues.

Lindsay,
Yes, it was indeed a small bug in the MET's GRIB2 library code for
parsing
the hemisphere from the grid spec for both polar stereographic and
lambert
conformal projections. It's an easy fix that I'll include in the next
version and post as a bugfix for met-8.0.
After fixing that I was able to plot the sea ice data using MET's
plot_data_plane tool. The resulting image is attached (ice.png).
That
data looks OK but the background map looks wrong. But then I checked
NCEP's website for an image of this grid (NCEP Grid #172):
https://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/docs/on388/grids/grid172.gif
And the map backgrounds do match. I suspect that there is a problem
with
the grid definition for this data in the GRIB2 file.
Thanks,
John

Lindsay,
I just posted the bugfix for this here:
https://dtcenter.org/met/users/support/known_issues/METv8.0/index.php
And I'll resolve this issue now.
Thanks,
John
