John, I thought I sent this last week but not sure now so apologize if you already have it.
I have been having problems getting MET to degrib WRF data. I get the following message with I use the attached config file:

Bob,
My apologies for the delay. Last week was very, very busy teaching a
tutorial at NCEP. I'm finally back in the office today.
I went to take a look at your most recent email. I received two
attachments (listed below) but neither is actually the GRIB file.
- grib1_af_131_57.txt PointStatConfig_dust_updated
I checked the ftp site and found your GRIB file but it's zero length:

qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400
My guess is that it got aged off before I grabbed it.
You could either repost it to or you could try stripping out the
single
GRIB record of interest and sending that to me via email. For the
latter,
here's how you can run wgrib to extract a single record:
wgrib -d 127 -grib -o qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400_VIS.grb
qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400

I went to take a look at your most recent email. I received two
attachments (listed below) but neither is actually the GRIB file.
- grib1_af_131_57.txt PointStatConfig_dust_updated
I checked the ftp site and found your GRIB file but it's zero length:

qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400
My guess is that it got aged off before I grabbed it.
You could either repost it to or you could try stripping out the
single GRIB record of interest and sending that to me via email. For
the latter, here's how you can run wgrib to extract a single record:
wgrib -d 127 -grib -o qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400_VIS.grb
qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400

Good news. I was able run plot_data_plane on that file and produce
output
without any problems. See the attached plot. We just need to get you
up
and running:

Running met-5.2 works as well on my machine, but version 5.1 does not.
Could you please try running this command and let me know how it goes:

output without any problems. See the attached plot. We just need to

Running met-5.2 works as well on my machine, but version 5.1 does not.

Bob,
Hmmm, let's see if you have any influential environment variables set
which
would impact the behavior of the MET tools. Please run:
printenv | egrep -i "MET_|GRIB_TABLES"
If you have "MET_BASE", "MET_GRIB_TABLES" or "USER_GRIB_TABLES",
please try
unsetting them and running again.
One possibility is that you have MET_BASE set and pointing to data
from MET
version 5.1 or earlier. That would be telling the MET tools to use
old
GRIB table definitions which don't include the Air Force ones... and
that
would explain the behavior you're seeing.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

For your information, I set my environmental variable (5.2 version) to
the directory containing my grib tables:

USER=qcteam
USER_GRIB_TABLES=/h/data/global/WXQC/data/met/config/grib2
In that directory I have the my grib1 and grib2 table listed:
[1398 qcteam hpc9-lsn-01d /h/data/global/WXQC/data/met/config/grib2]
ls
grib1_af_131_57.txt grib2_geps.txt
It is my understanding that MET will look in these tables first to
find a match for the variable name and grib codes (kpds 5,6,7). If it
doesn't find a match here, then it will look in the share directory on
met-5.2. Am I missing anything in this understanding?

Good news. I was able run plot_data_plane on that file and produce
output without any problems. See the attached plot. We just need to
get you up and running:
met-6.0/bin/plot_data_plane qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400 vis.ps
'name="VIS"; level="Z2";'
Running met-5.2 works as well on my machine, but version 5.1 does not.
Could you please try running this command and let me know how it goes:

isn't working as we intend. Please try running the following

Looking closely at the GRIB files you sent I see that it uses GRIB
table
number 133 (not 131, like we were thinking):
wgrib -V -d 25 qc_170426_us057g1011t77a000002400
Undefined parameter table (center 57-1 table 133), using NCEP-opn
rec 25:15661098:date 2017042600 <%28201%29%20704-2600> UGRD kpds5=33
kpds6=100 kpds7=50 levels=(0,50) grid=255 50 mb 24hr fcst:
Note that wgrib warns us that that parameter table is undefined, so it
defaults to NCEP's operational usage. When you run met-5.2, it should
be
reading GRIB tables from this directory:
ls /h/WXQC/met-5.2/share/met/table_files
Looking carefully, there are only 2 for parameter table number 133:
grib1_ecmwf_133_98.txt, grib1_ncep_133_7.txt
But neither of those are for the Air Force (i.e. center number 57). I
ran
this through the debugger to see what's happening. In the MET library
code, the function "is_prelim_match()" does a GRIB table lookup. But
it
doesn't find a match for PTV = 133 and Center = 57, so it then does
another
lookup using the default values, PTV = 2 and Center = 7. That's why
mine
is working.
I wonder if you still have all the GRIB table files that were
distributed
with met-5.2. When MET was installed, they should have been copied
into
this directory:
/h/WXQC/met-5.2/share/met/table_files
It should contain 50 files that start with "grib" and end with ".txt":
ls /h/WXQC/met-5.2/share/met/table_files/grib*.txt | wc -w
If it doesn't, then you should either rerun "make install" for met-5.2
to
re-copy them over. Or figure out where they are and set the MET_BASE
environment variable to tell MET where to find them.

John, we have 47 grib.txt files in that directory. I was my
understanding however that when I set USER_GRIB_TABLES to a directory,
MET will look in this directory first for the GRIB values. I have the
AF table which uses GRIB table number 131 in that directory so I
thought that was all I had to do. We did get 6.0 running and the
problem goes away with that version (I set the MET_GRIB_TABLES
variable and it is being used) - maybe we have a configuration problem
with 5.2. We are going through the process of getting 5.2 approved
on our new system. Once that is done, it should much quicker to get
6.0 approved. We shall see. This problem should be resolved and to
the next one.
