Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi there,
I'm wondering if there's a way to obtain the total number of OFCL intensity
forecasts >= 20 kt in 24 h? I don't necessarily want to verify the
forecasts, as this will exclude some cases. Is there a way to verify the
OFCL forecasts against OFCL so that all the forecasts are counted?
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
Great question. Yes, I think that should work. Please select a
single
file containing OFCL track data. Pass that file in for both the "-
adeck"
and "-bdeck" command line options to tc_pairs.
Please let me know how it goes. If it all goes smoothly, that's
great. If
not, I can dig further into the details.
Thanks,
John

John,
Thank you, that seems to work. When running tc_pairs, it loops through
all
the models in the ATCF file and uses them as the BMODEL. This could be
avoided by pre-thinning the ATCF file. Very useful, thanks!
Take care,
Andy

Andrew,
Even easier... just edit the TC-Pairs config file by setting:
model = [ "OFCL" ];
That will ignore track data for all models other than "OFCL".

Hi John,
When I set model = ["OFCL"]; in the TCPairs configuration file, and
specify
the adeck file to be both the adeck and bdeck files, it still grabs
all of
the models in the adeck file and treats them as best tracks. Here's
one of
the summary lines: Matching 18 ADECK tracks to 2341 BDECK tracks.
However, it's not a problem to pre-thin the adeck file. That works
fine.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
Thanks for the feedback. That makes sense, actually. The "model"
filtering setting should apply to whatever data you pass in using the
"-adeck" option and not the "-bdeck" option.
We could pretty easily extend the logic in future releases to support
"AMODEL" and "BMODEL" settings to define filtering logic for them
separately. For now, I'll go ahead and resolve this ticket. Just
keep
that option in mind for the future. If you think that would be a
helpful
enhancement, we could add it to the list.
Thanks,
John
