Hello,
I have question on mode_analysis config files. I want to stratify the results by latitude. The config files contains the following parameters:
centroid_lat_min = -20.0;
centroid_lat_max = 20.0;
However, using these settings seems to get me the same results as when I use the NH option between 0 and 90? So the filtering doesn't appear to be working? I had thought it had worked before but it would appear not. I don't think it has ever worked.
Am I missing a trick somewhere?

I took a quick glance at the parts of the mode analysis
code that deal with centroid latitude, and didn't really
see a problem.
One thing you could try is to use the "-dump_row" option when
you use the mode analysis tool to see the lines it kept
for its statistics. If there still seems to be a problem,
then you could email me a mode ascii output file that you
think the mode analysis tool is not working correctly on,
and I'll try to duplicate the problem over here.

I tried a few simple experiments with the file you sent me and
the mode analysis tool seems to be working for me.
Here's the command I ran:
mode_analysis -lookin mode_960000L_20121209_120000V_000000A_obj.txt
\
-summary \
-dump_row out \
-v 10 \
-column area \
-single \
-simple \
-centroid_lat_min 0 \
-centroid_lat_max 90 \
and I varied the centroid_lat_min and centroid_lat_max values to see
what would happen. In each case it seemed to work ok.
I noticed that there were no objects with centroid lat between
-20 and 20 in this file. Could that be the problem?
If none of the above helps you, then could you send me the exact
command line (and config file, if you're using one) so I can do
some more testing?

Hi Randy,
I *think* I understand. The filtering does not work for paired objects
because the column with the lat/lon info is missing, and I was looking
at the output of the paired objects because I would like to have those
stratified too, and I thought they were, but they can't be.
Does that make sense?

I tried a few simple experiments with the file you sent me and the
mode analysis tool seems to be working for me.
Here's the command I ran:
mode_analysis -lookin mode_960000L_20121209_120000V_000000A_obj.txt
\
-summary \
-dump_row out \
-v 10 \
-column area \
-single \
-simple \
-centroid_lat_min 0 \
-centroid_lat_max 90 \
and I varied the centroid_lat_min and centroid_lat_max values to see
what would happen. In each case it seemed to work ok.
I noticed that there were no objects with centroid lat between -20 and
20 in this file. Could that be the problem?
If none of the above helps you, then could you send me the exact
command line (and config file, if you're using one) so I can do some
more testing?

Hi Randy,
not sure if there is any other way of doing it but I am writing a bit
of R script that will read the forecast and observed objects dump_row
text files (which were created using the centroid_lat_min/max option),
creating paired ids and then searching for them in the paired dump_row
file to select out the paired objects which fall into my region of
interest....
I'll pass the guts of the code back to you... you may want to add
something like it to the Rscripts directory in future...

I tried a few simple experiments with the file you sent me and the
mode analysis tool seems to be working for me.
Here's the command I ran:
mode_analysis -lookin mode_960000L_20121209_120000V_000000A_obj.txt
\
-summary \
-dump_row out \
-v 10 \
-column area \
-single \
-simple \
-centroid_lat_min 0 \
-centroid_lat_max 90 \
and I varied the centroid_lat_min and centroid_lat_max values to see
what would happen. In each case it seemed to work ok.
I noticed that there were no objects with centroid lat between -20 and
20 in this file. Could that be the problem?
If none of the above helps you, then could you send me the exact
command line (and config file, if you're using one) so I can do some
more testing?

Marion -
(1) You're correct that there isn't really a centroid location
(lat/lon or x/y)
that can be defined for a pair of objects.
(2) I think it's great that you're writing some code (R or other)
yourself.
The mode analysis tool was never meant to be the only (or even
the main)
way for users to analyze the mode output. When you're finished,
send it
along and I'll put it in our contributed code section.
(3) Something to keep in mind for the future: I'mm currently about
to start
working on a set of tools for summarizing the mode output. The
difference
between these new tools and the mode analysis tool is that the
new
tools will produce graphical output, not just an ascii table.
Scatter plots, histograms, object plots with geographical maps,
etc.
I'll consider your mode analysis issue to be resolved, then.
