Initial Request

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

I have been a registered MET user for years now, but I can't recall
registering on this link below. Can you confirm whether or not I am a
registered user of this site?
http://mailman.ucar.edu/mailman/listinfo/met_help
My team here at ARL has expanded by a few people and wondered if it's OK to
have them register as well to they can use the archive and request help desk
assistance?
Thanks.

John,
To answer your question, no, you are not registered to the met_help
archive mailing list archive. You are however, a registered user of
MET. You filled out the registration information when you
downloaded the code.
There are currently only 2 people registered to the met_help mailing
list, and in fact, we do not generally recommend that people register
to it. When people send a question to met_help, a new ticket
gets created in our support system. We go back and forth via email
and eventually resolve the issue. Once the issue is resolved, the
email history for the ticket automatically gets posted to that
met_help mailing list.
If you were subscribed to that mailing list, you'd get a copy of every
single met_help issue that gets resolved. And I don't think that
would be generally useful.
However, that mailing list is publicly available, and you can search
through it:
http://mailman.ucar.edu/pipermail/met_help/
For example, searching the following through google "met_help john
raby" returns information about several support tickets that posted to
that mailing list. Make sense?
This is our cheap and easy way of documenting the user support we
provide, and potentially, users are able to find previous answers to
similar questions.
You are welcome to subscribe to it if you'd like, but I doubt it'd be
useful for you to see all the support requests that come through the
system.
Hope that helps clarify.
Thanks,
John

John -
Sorry for the delayed response, I was out of the office since last
Thursday.
Your answer is consistent with my sense about how we best interact. I
have
found that the use of the met_help contact email system has worked out
very
well for us and intend on continuing our use of it in the future.
Thanks for
your support for this method of problem resolution. I will try using
the
mailing list as a resource for searches on past problems/resolutions
but will
not subscribe to it.
R/
John
