  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

My name is Michael Hollan. I am a graduate student in Atmospheric Science at Texas Tech University. I am attempting to use MODE for my thesis work. Specifically, I will be looking at simulated radar reflectivity in the WRF model compared to radar observations. In order for MODE to work, I was wondering if both my model field and observation field need to be in the same format. For example, will MODE work if my model is in netCDF format but my observations are in grib2 format?

I appreciate your time and look forward to your response. I may have further questions based on the answer to the question stated above.

Thanks,

Michael Hollan

Michael,

That's not a problem. One can be GRIB2 and the other NetCDF.
However,
there are a few things to consider:

- The two fields must be on exactly the same grid. Otherwise, MODE
will
error out with and error message to that effect.

- The settings in the "fcst" and "obs" field will differ when you're
selecting which 2D data fields will be used from each file. Just look
at
the example test scripts and let me know if you get stuck.

- Hopefully, your model output is not a WRF output file directly. MET
doesn't read WRF output directly - instead, it must first be
proprocessed
using either the pinterp utility for WRF-ARW or the Unified
PostProcessor
(UPP).

Lastly, we just became aware of a bug in the areas that are being
written
out by the MODE tool. The areas artificially inflated because we're
essentially adding 1 extra row and column to the output. We're
working on
a fix for this and it'll be included in the METv4.1 release, which
should
be coming in the next couple of weeks.

Just let us know if you have more questions.

John,

Thanks for your help! I can just use copygb to get both fields on the
exact same grid, correct?

Thanks again,
Michael

Michael,

Yes, that's right. Copygb can be used to regrid GRIB files. However,
it
only works on GRIB1 data at this point - not GRIB2. The wgrib2
utility
actually provides some limited support for regridding GRIB2 files - so
that's an option.

But probably the easiest is to use the cnvgrib utility to convert from
GRIB2 to GRIB1, and then use copygb. Examples of running copygb for
different projection types can be found in the online MET tutorial:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/online_tutorial/METv4.0/copygb/index.php

Hope that helps.

Hopefully at some point we'll provide a regridding tool within MET
itself
to make this all easier.
