Hi John,
There seems to be a bug introduced in the METv4.1 patches.
When I run METv4.1 with the latest patches (ignore the path to the
CV_xsmall.poly) I get this error.
ERROR :
ERROR : check_grib() -> unable to read header from input file
"/extended/METv3.0.1/data/poly/CV_xsmall.poly"
ERROR :
This does not happen in METv4.1.201305022.tar.gz or my METv4.0. This also
does not happen for all my poly files.just some. I uploaded my
CV_xsmall.poly file to ftp://ftp.rap.ucar.edu/incoming/irap/met_help/Travis/
along with my point_conf_AIR_SFC file.

Thanks for letting me know. That was an unintended consequence of the
bugfix posted on 6/13/2013:
