Initial Request

My name is Kenneth James, and I'm a meteorologist at the
Hydrometeorological Prediction Center, National Weather Service, Camp
Springs, MD. We use METv2.0 for object oriented verification of our
precipitation forecasts. We find it extremely useful and informative, and
are grateful for your contributions. We display and interpret our
forecasts in inches rather than millimeters, and was wondering if it is
possible to convert the units used in the MODE display from millimeters to
inches? We use both grib and netcdf file types. Any assistance you can
provide is greatly appreciated.
Regards
Kenny James

Kenny,
I was not able to find your email address in the list of registered
MET users. In order to ensure that we are in
compliance with the export laws of the United States, we are only able
to provide direct support to registered users.
Once you fill out the free registration, I'll be able to help.
Please go to the following page and provide your email address. Hit
enter and you'll be taken to the registration form:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/downloads/index.php
Please write back to let me know when that's done.

Thank you Paul. I just registered. I'm with the National Weather
Service
Hydrometeorological Prediction Center. My office likely has 1 or more
other registered members as well. Since we already have the MET
software,
I do not need to download and reinstall at this time. Do you need
additional information from me?
thanks

Kenny,
Thanks for registering. First of all, I recommend upgrading your
version of MET to the latest release (v4.0). You can
download it here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/downloads/index.php. The latest
version has many fixes and
improvements that we highly recommend.
Regarding the MODE output: unfortunately, it is not possible to change
the units that MODE uses when it generates the
postscript output files (I assume this is what you mean by
"display"?). MET is intended to be a verification tool, and
thus we have not developed much capability for customizing the output
format. MODE does write out a NetCDF file with
information about the objects that it detected, allowing users of MODE
to plot the object information using whatever
tool they like (R, IDV, NCL, etc.). This approach would give you the
capability to change the precip units. In the
DTC, we have developed some NCL scripts for generating these MODE
plots. I could send you one or more of these scripts
that you could modify to suit your needs. Please let me know if you
are interested.
