[Met_help] [rt.rap.ucar.edu #57660] History for Segmentation Fault METv4.0

Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I'm attempting to run grid_stat and I am receiving a segmentation fault
after grid_stat finds the first Grib record match.
I have two grib1 files, both having been regridded via copygb. The
second file (blah.grb) was converted to grib1 from grib2 via cnvgrb
before regridding, while the first file
(wrfpost_d01_2009-08-15_06:00:00_regrid.Grb) is a regridded UPPv1.0
output file.
METv4.0 was compiled without grib2 support on Linux whiteout
2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Jan 16 16:22:28 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
running Debian 6.0.4 with the pgcc compiler.
The command line issued was:
METv4.0/bin/grid_stat
/d1/anewman/wrf/nepal_nest/postprd/pres_sfc/wrfpost_d01_2009-08-15_06:00:00_regrid.Grb
/d1/anewman/wrf/nepal_nest/cfs_r/blah.grb ./config/GridStatConfig -v 1000
I've attached my config file and the grid_stat verbose output. I can
put the grib files onto scratch if you'd like.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
I would like to reproduce the behavior that you have reported on my
own system so I can debug it. Can you please upload
your GRIB data files to the RAL FTP site using the following
instructions:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp
I don't think that it will help in your case, but I recommend that you
download and incorporate the latest METv4.0 patch
into your instance. Instructions to download and install it are here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/known_issues/METv4.0/index.php
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
The files are up on the ftp site.
I do have the patch installed, sorry I forgot to mention that in the
first email. I couldn't get it to compile without the patch, issue #3
killed it.
Cheers,
Andy

Not sure if this is relevant at all but I've been able to successfully
run point_stat and mode on other data from the same compile.

Andy,
Does grid_stat seg fault on other data besides that which is involved
in this test case?

It runs without issue when doing the first tutorial case (APCP_12).
This was the first pass on my own data. My obs file is in grib2, but
I
can't seem to get copygb to cooperate and get the fcst file on the
same
grid as the obs file. So as a workaround, I converted the grib2 file
to
grib1 and then ran copygb on both the fcst and obs files to obtain a
common grid (NCEP grid 4).

Andy,
I think I found a way to fix the problem. Remove the empty string
from the poly setting in the mask section of your
GridStatConfig file:
mask = {
grid = [ "FULL" ];
poly = [ ];
};
Obviously, grid_stat should not seg fault in this case - it should
give a helpful error message describing the problem.
We will look into how to catch this error and give feedback in a
future MET patch or release. Thanks for reporting
this problem. If you have any more trouble getting it to work, please
let me know.

That worked like a charm.
Thanks!
