Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hello met help,
I am trying to run point_stat on upper-level data for T, Td, spfh, ugrd, vgrd, and wind speed in MET v3.
Since I have observational data that do not necessarily fall on a mandatory pressure level, I am giving a range of +/- 10 mb in the PointStat config file for making fcst-obs pairs.
The error arises after reading in the fcst and obs data:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for TMP/P260-240.
For TMP/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for DPT/P260-240.
For DPT/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for SPFH/P260-240.
For SPFH/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for UGRD/P260-240.
For UGRD/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for VGRD/P260-240.
For VGRD/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading records for WIND/P260-240.
For WIND/P260-240 found 3 forecast levels and 0 climatology levels.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Searching 9525 observations from 685 PrepBufr messages.
ERROR: process_obs_file() -> when computing vector winds, each UGRD observation must be followed by a VGRD observation with the same header and at the same level
FYI, my point stat command line is given below.
I have already ensured that the data in the observation netcdf file have the variables ordered properly at each level so that the grib code is 32, 33, 34 in that order for each point observation.
I appreciate the help you can offer!
-Jonathan

Jonathan,
Can you please send us the model data, obs data, point_stat config
file that you are using? If you used ascii2nc to
generate the obs NetCDF file that you refer to, can you please also
send us the ASCII obs data file? Also, are you
using METv3.0 or METv3.0.1? I'm anticipating that this data will be
too big to attach to an email, and if so, you can
follow the instructions at the link below to upload it to our FTP
site.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hello Paul,
I have uploaded the files you requested to my outgoing
ftp folder at:
ftp://ftp.nsstc.org/outgoing/casejl/met/
You have
one week to acquire the files before they are deleted from the server.
Files listed are:
-PointStatConfig_UPA_CONUS (obviously the config
file)
-SPORT.WRFPRS.201104270000.GrbF018.gz (gzipped GRIB-1 forecast
file)
-upperdump_20110427_18.txt.gz (Input text data for the ascii2nc
program, containing ACARS, RAOB, and PROFILER data)
-upperobs_20110427_18.nc (netcdf obs file from the ascii2nc program)
Also, it appears that we have METv3.0, however, we installed the
patches file METv3.0_patches_20110715.tar.
Thanks a lot for the
help!
Jonathan

Subject: Re: [rt.rap.ucar.edu #49830] error in point_stat: upper-level verif of U/V winds
From: Paul Oldenburg

Jonathan,
I tracked the error message to the observations that appear in your
ASCII file upperdump_20110427_18.txt at line 4299.
At that line, there are several UGRD (grib code 33) observations, each
of which is not immediately followed by a VGRD
(grib code 34) observation. If you are interested in computing the
vector partial sums, VL1L2, then it is necessary to
interleave these observations. On the other hand, if you deactivate
the VL1L2 output line type in your config file
output_flag setting (item 9), point_stat will not expect each UGRD
observation to be immediately followed by a VGRD obs
and everything will run as-is.
I would have worked harder to fix up your ASCII obs file, but it looks
like the problem is fairly widespread starting at
line 4299. I did truncate this file and re-run ascii2nc and
point_stat, and everything worked fine with the first 4298
observations, which included many UGRD and VGRD pairs.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Paul

Thank-you, Paul.
I will work to see if I can fix my pre-processing
script to sort the data appropriately. I must have missed something.
