Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I have recently been doing some work with WRF and am trying to add the the
model evaluation tools to our standard model verification system. I
started the process by running the pressure interpolation program on a
single wrfout file, which appeared to finish correctly. I have attached an
ncdump of the file header to this email it is called
wrfout_d02_2011-12-07_00:00:00_PLEV.txt. Then I downloaded a single prebufr
file from an NCEP repository for the time centered on the forecast period
and ran PB2NC and this also appeared to finish correctly and output a
single netcdf file, the header information is also attached (PB2NC.txt).
Then I attempted to run the point stat utility on these two files but the
program errors out telling me that there are more forecast field that
observational fields "ERROR: PointStatConfInfo::process_config() -> The
number fcst_thresh entries provided must match the number of fields
provided in fcst_field.". I ran the following command from the terminal to
run point stat "bin/point_stat wrfout_d02_2011-12-07_00:00:00_PLEV out.nc
PointStatConfig". I am not sure what the problem is I have red the
documentation and it appears to be setup correctly but I am not completely
sure as I have never used this software before. What should these namelist
fields look like using 2 netcdf files (1.Forecast 1.Obs), trying to verify
10 meter winds? I appreciate your help!
Also ... I ran the test all scripts after compilation , and the code
completed successfully with no errors.
Thanks ,
Tim

Tim,
I see that you're not currently a registered user of the MET software.
Prior to providing direct support in the use of
MET, we require that users fill out the free online registration form.
That enables us to ensure that we remain in
compliance with the international export laws of the United States.
To fill out the registration, just go here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/downloads/index.php
Enter you email address and hit enter to be taken to the form.
Please let me know when you have registered.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
I registered with this address... and was previously registered with
melino at atmos.albany.edu but I sent the e-mail from my meso account.

Tim,
Thanks for registering. The reason for the error you reported is that
the fcst_field setting has a different number of
elements than the fcst_thresh setting in PointStatConfig. If you want
to verify surface temperature, for example, you
should try settings like this:
fcst_field[] = [ "TMP/Z2" ];
obs_field[] = [];
fcst_thresh = [ "ge273" ];
obs_thresh = [];
Note that leaving the obs_ settings blank tells MET to use the same
fields, levels and thresholds for the observations
as was specified for the forecast. Does that make sense? I usually
start by trying to verify a single field and then
add fields and levels once that is working. Also, if you are
interested in verifying fields on levels other than
surface, you should read about the message_type setting. For example,
you may want to change that setting to "ANYSFC".
Please let me know if you have any more trouble.
Thanks,
Paul

Alright,
I understand by leaving the obs blank it should use the same field as
the
forecast setting but it is giving the following error after I made
your
changes.
"ERROR: PointStatConfInfo::process_config() -> When using a gridded
NetCDF
forecast file, "obs_field" cannot be blank. You must specify the
verifying
observations using a GRIB code."

Tim,
Can you please upload the data that you are using to our FTP site so I
can have a look? I'm puzzled as to why MET
thinks your observation data is gridded, when the pb2nc output should
be point observations. The instructions for
uploading data are here:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp. Please
let me know if you have any
questions.
Thanks,
Paul

Tim,
Can you please include the PrepBUFR file that you are converting using
pb2nc as well?
