Estella,

Use "-9999" for missing or bad data.

Please take a look at the output of the ASCII2NC test script in METv1.1/out/ascii2nc/sample_ascii.nc.

Doing an 'ncdump' on that file, you should see these lines in the output:
hdr_arr:_fill_value = -9999.f ;
obs_arr:_fill_value = -9999.f ;

This indicates that a value of "-9999" stands for missing or fill data.

Also, just a reminder... be sure to check the known issues page on the MET website for postings of the latest bugs:

You can download fixes from there for bugs that have been found.
