NUTRIENT CYCLING IN AMAZONIA: ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATIC CHANGES

Abstract

Nutrient cycles in Amazonia are known as tight and mostly dependent upon
the recycling of organic matter, strongly linked to intense and
continuous biological activity. Recent studies, including those carried
out by LBA (Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions in Amazonia) Program,
acting in the whole Amazonia in the last 11 years, confirm such
features. Also, added some new information on the mechanisms which allow
a high-biomass and diverse forest to grow on soils generally very poor
in mineral nutrients. New insights include the role of local and
regional topography on processes such as soil carbon and nitrogen
storage and cycling; the role of atmospheric inputs to nutrient supply
of the forest; and the rehabilitation of soil conditions and nutrient
cycling after land abandonment. The changes induced by deforestation,
land use and climate changes on nutrient cycling were analyzed under
some aspects in parts of the region, with special emphasis on central
Amazonia. The need for a better integration of nutrient cycling to
atmospheric chemistry shall be discussed and taken into account in order
to achieve a better understanding of the complex processes governing the
functioning of Amazonia.
