On Wednesday we held a small workshop for undergraduate researchers on how to prepare a good talk. These resources may be useful to you. It involves the Assertion-Evidence model for giving talks, which is a totally different way of presenting than the science community has been doing for the past 40 years. Check it out. *Giving a Strong Talk Using the Assertion-Evidence Model * (website with resources ) *Videos: ** (it's really worth watching these)* 1. "Build talks on messages not topics " (4.5 min) (Found on this web page) 2. "Support messages with visuals not bullets " (<5 min) 3. "Assertion-evidence slides for a research talk" (27 min) Michael Alley explains the science behind this approach including the science of how the brain (and those of audience members) can learn and can't learn. . In the 1980s a Canadian psychologist figured out that people use the same part of their brain to read and to listen. Not too long afterwards, an Australian determined that this part of the brain could be overloaded by having too much information come in. It's fascinating 4. To see a good example of a TED TALK using the Assertion-Evidence approach, watch this one on spiders . There are good examples in those slide decks, though. *Slides: *See the attached PDF for the slides from the workshop. * * * * * * * * * * May you have a wonderful weekend!
